Raising Hope Season 3 Review “Burt-Mitzvah: The Musical; Mother’s Day”

Raising Hope concluded it’s great third season tonight with yet another two-parter, starting out with the hilarious "Burt-Mitzvah: The Musical". Enjoying a nice bump from American Idol as it’s lead-in, I was really hoping that the show would close out the season on a high note (Pun intended!). I guess it was only a matter of time until a show this goofy and out there did a musical episode, so I wasn’t exactly surprised to see them go that route tonight. Musical episodes are often a risky proposition, and they only ever seem to be incredibly successful (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) or completely disastrous (7th Heaven). Thankfully tonight’s episode was absolutely hilarious, and the songs were overall very well written and performed. READ MORE...

Raising Hope Season 3 Review “Making the Band; The Old Girl”

Raising Hope  returned tonight with another double dose of entertainment with the two episodes "Making the Band" and "The Old Girl". The first one was an instant classic that brought back the cast of My Name is Earl  for a hilarious birthday celebration, but the second one…wasn’t quite as good. Now don’t get me wrong; I actually enjoyed both episodes tonight quite a bit! I actually think this was the strongest double dose that we’ve had ever since  Ben and Kate  got cancelled and Raising  Hope had to double up to cover for them. It’s just hard for any episode to follow an episode as immediately memorable as "Making the Band". When I heard before tonight that the episode would be a reunion of My Name is Earl , I had no idea how deep the reunion  would go! The whole cast came back! Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee, Jaime Pressly, Nadine Velazquez and Eddie Steeples all made a return, and we even had a sighting of TV’s Tim Stack! READ MORE...

Raising Hope Season 3 Review “Arbor Daze”

Raising Hope  returned tonight after being preempted last week by the State of the Union address, and now we all get to celebrate Arbor Day a couple months early with the hilarious and touching "Arbor Daze"! Maybe if we didn’t have so many back-to-back episodes due to  Ben and Kate ‘s cancellation, we’d probably be watching this episode a little closer  to the  actual  holiday for it to make a little more sense. Not that it really matters, because an episode this touching and this emotional is welcome any time of the year! One of the best parts of  Raising Hope  is seeing all of the crazy things the Chances do to save money and the goofy choices they made in raising Jimmy. I’ve been a little critical of the Jimmy flashback scenes that we’ve seen so far, as they usually just end up making me feel bad for young Jimmy. However, I loved seeing Jimmy celebrating all of the different holidays as a kid. It was so sweet to see Burt and Virginia go out of their way to make all of these minor holidays so special for their son, and it would only make sense that Jimmy would want to pass this on to his daughter. Unfortunately, Sabrina is not having any of this senseless tree-killing! READ MORE...

Raising Hope Season 3 Review “Yo Zappa Do, Part 2; Sex, Clown and Videotape”

Raising Hope  returned tonight with two more brand new episodes, starting out with the second half of the two parter "Yo Zappa Do: Part 2?. With Hope being discovered as a child star at the end of last week’s installment, the rest of the Chance family needs to find things to do in Hollywood! Some of them with pretty great results, some of them were…well…not so great. Burt’s story was the funniest for me, but I really think that most of the jokes would be lost on most people that maybe don’t follow TV as closely as I do. I love the idea of Burt’s landscaping  plans being an allegory for a new TV program , and the idea of networks getting too involved in the creative process and diminishing the quality of the product is a struggle we hear about all of the time in the TV business. I loved the FOX executive saying that they’d like his landscaping to appeal more to the 18-34 demo, and Burt’s "That’s for cancelling  My Name is Earl " was one of the best lines of the night! Raising Hope Season 3 Review “Modern Wedding; Yo Zappa Do, Part 1?

Raising Hope  returned tonight with a big two parter, and it contained the big event we’ve all been waiting for: Jimmy and Sabrina’s wedding! After looking forward to this for so long, I was surprised it was already upon us so quickly! I felt like the wedding  would have been on a finale episode or the last episode before a hiatus, but definitely not the first part of a two-parter! That’s right, tonight was a rare two-parter of  Raising Hope , as we were treated to "Modern Wedding" and  "Yo Zappa Do: Part 1?. I’ve never really enjoyed full hours of comedies that are usually half an hour, as I feel like shows like this one lend themselves much better to 30 minute increments. Tonight’s installments were both solid, but I definitely feel like you can have too much of a good thing. READ MORE...

Raising Hope Season 3 Review “What Happens at Howdy’s Doesn’t Stay at Howdy’s”

Well gather ’round the TV and get your boner scones, everybody! It’s time for the bachelor  andbachelorette parties  for our  Raising Hope  cast in tonight’s crazy episode "What Happens at Howdy’s Doesn’t Stay at Howdy’s". Right after seeing Ben and Leslie celebrate their respective bachelor and bachelorette parties on  Parks and Recreation  last week in a very hilarious and heartwarming episode, tonight’s installment of Raising Hope  paled in comparison for me. This episode was an admitted sendup of the super popular Hangover  films, as we see Jimmy’s bachelor party quickly go crazily over the top just like in  The Hangover , but now at the end of the night there’s a twist! Jimmy has been tricked into marrying Frank! READ MORE...

Raising Hope Season 3 Review “Lord of the Ring”

Raising Hope  returned tonight with a solid episode in "Lord of the Ring", as Jimmy tackles a very important part of the engagement  process: Buying  a ring! However, this wouldn’t be an episode of Raising Hope  if it didn’t involve a little deception, hilarity, and a heartwarming ending! Tonight’s installment was yet  another  episode with a major secret in the Chance family, as we find out that Virginia has been pawning her engagement ring  off and on over the years to get some extra cash. I know I complain about this every week, so maybe I could stop and just accept it as "part of the show ", but I still maintain it’s a little formulaic and predictable when  every single episode  has somebody in the Chance family trying to keep a major secret from their family members. Raising Hope Season 3 Review “Credit Where Credit is Due”

Well, here it is, ladies and gentlemen! The first episode of  Raising Hope  in 2013, and actually my first review of any TV show. Can a great guest star  elevate "Credit Where Credit  is Due" above the rest of the season three episodes? Or does it fall flat? Read on to find out! Tonight’s installment starts out with  Raising Hope  losing one of its finest recurring characters: Jimmy’s van! This baby blue beauty was in the pilot, it’s in the opening credit sequence, and it’s been in the background of just about every episode of the series. It’s a shame that the poor thing is falling apart and Jimmy is off to find a new car , but at least we got a couple laughs out of it. READ MORE...

Raising Hope Season 3 Review “The Last Christmas”

Raising Hope  wishes you a "Howdy Christmas" tonight with yet another great holiday themed episode, "The Last Christmas". This show has quite a high standard to live up to when it comes to Christmas episodes, with season one’s "Toy Story" and season two’s "It’s a Hopeful Life" being classic installments, but thankfully tonight’s episode was able to introduce just enough new elements and originality to make it yet another classic. It makes total sense for Virginia’s character that she would be one of those crazy people that think that the world will end on 12/21/12. Virginia has always been very impressionable by things she sees or hears from the media, so it totally rings true that she would take this completely to heart. Raising Hope Season 3 Review “Squeak Means Squeak”

Raising Hope  continued its stellar third season  tonight with another great episode in "Squeak Means Squeak". When just about every episode of this show addresses and pokes fun at some serious issues or teaches us a moral, it’s good to have an episode that addresses an issue that’s gone unchecked long enough: Squirrel rapists! Yes,  Raising Hope  mercifully stopped trying to force their characters to learn some kind  of lesson, and instead mostly focused on cracking us up. Probably the most outlandishly awesome storyline came from Burt and Virginia trying to track down a squirrel rapist that Burt claimed he saw in a park. I loved Burt frantically trying to retell the traumatic story of somebody being raped to Virginia, before actually clarifying that he wasn’t talking about a human being. I especially loved Virginia’s reaction, where she reminded Burt that he needs to start off his stories by telling her what species they’re talking about, which indicates that telling scandalous stories about animals isn’t new for Burt. The real payoff came from some fancy CGI that actually  showed  this perverted squirrel chasing down a poor, unsuspecting victim right in front of Virginia! I love that they didn’t just give Burt and Virginia secondary storyline where they just reacted to whatever was going on with Sabrina and Jimmy, and they actually had a more engaging story overall.
