The show status needs updating. It ended October 2016 for the 2nd and last time.

Ripper Street provides a gritty look at the evolving streets of London and the advent of technology at the time; be it the "moving-picture-machine" that is featured in "I Need Light" or the introduction of early forensics that follows through the series.

More interesting still is that it is the dirt and bones look at the uses of said technology that is in play here. This is no wink-wink "look at how charming early cameras were" depiction, but rather a portrayal of the underbelly of what those cameras would have been used for.

A predictable show greatly elevated by the quality of its dialogue. Characters are occasionally schizophrenic; they toss morals, duty, character development out the window at the snap of a finger, with only Jerome Flynn's character ever remaining consistent.

Really love the actors in this. Great story lines, and depiction of the time period.

It's slow. Definitely meant for fans of period pieces. Not particularly gripping or suspenseful.

I usually steer clear of anything set in England, but thought I would give this a try. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is. The whole show is brilliantly cast, and Matthew MacFadyen brings something to the role of inspector Reid that I don't think many people could.
