The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of September 18, 2017

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   The Good Place (Season 2 Premiere) Wednesday at 10 pm on NBC Why: Ok, if you haven't watched Season 1 of The Good Place and somehow still haven't been spoiled, stop reading this right now. Otherwise, after one of the best forking twists we've ever seen on television, how can we not tune into the second season of this delightful afterlife comedy? Michael Schur ( The Office , Parks and Recreation ) has created this original, colorful world that we now know is much darker than it outwardly appears. In what was a smartly paced season, with fun mini-twists throughout, the best was saved for last. As it turns out, Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil), and Jason (Manny Jacinto) have not been in The Good Place, as was previously thought. All along, they've been in The Bad Place, architected by Michael (Ted Dansen) specifically to torment them. While this would have been a perfect single season show, the finale also served as a brilliant reset. Now, the main characters have had their memories wiped and have been separated, helpless to experience this "Hell" once more, as Michael must attempt his experiment again (this time, without Eleanor figuring everything out). Prepare to talk about: Who will figure things out first this time around?; OF COURSE they were in The Bad Place all along with just fro-yo instead of ice-cream; when will we get to see Adam Scott again?   Teen Wolf (Series Finale) Sunday at 8 pm on MTV Why: It's time to say good-bye to Beacon Hills, and the 100th episode of Teen Wolf seems like a logical time to do so (I mean, you can't be a teen wolf forever. A lot of you guys also seem in agreement that while sad to see it go, it's probably the right time. As any supernatural series goes though, it's time for one final, all-out showdown before we can say good-bye forever. Scott and his crew will take on Gerard and his hunters in the ultimate good versus evil battle. Additionally, there's no better way to conclude than with visits from old friendly faces, including Stiles (now movie-star Dylan O'Brien) and Derek (fan favorite Tyler Hoechlin), conveniently back to assist in battle. Also set to return for the series finale are Kate (Jill Wagner), Jackson (Colton Haynes) and Ethan (Charlie Carver). The showrunner has promised a satisfying ending, and while we may be saying so-long for now, it likely isn't forever, as MTV has already announced that they'd like to reboot the series as a podcast in anthology form (do teens like podcasts?), and then perhaps resurrect the show with a new class at a later date. Prepare to talk about: But seriously, would anyone listen to a Teen Wolf podcast?; if you're worried about missing Tyler Posey, just start watching Jane the Virgin (you better be already, though)!   Star Trek: Discovery (Series Premiere) Sunday at 8:30 pm on CBS with future episodes exclusively on CBS All Access Why: There are a lot of open questions about Star Trek: Discovery . "Is it any good?" is just the tip of the iceberg. There's a lot riding on this series, as it is expected to be the centerpiece and launching pad of the CBS streaming service, CBS All Access (sorry, The Good Fight ). There isn't too much more to say about Discovery mainly because, well, we just don't know yet! CBS has kept most of the details (including any screeners) completely under wraps. Here are the few things we do know: The first season will roll out in 2 parts, with the first 8 episodes debuting now, followed by the latter 7 episodes beginning in January 2018. Discovery is a prequel series set about 10 years before the original series (which means it takes place after Star Trek: Enterprise , which is hard to believe has been off the air since 2005) and is separate from the timeline of the recent films. We've been teased "new crews," "new villains," "new heroes," and "new worlds", although there will also be a focus on a cold war between the Federation and the Klingons. This will be the first Star Trek series not told from the perspective of the captain; The Walking Dead actress Sonequa Martin-Green will be anchoring the series, playing the role of Number One. Beyond that, we're just going to have to watch and find out for ourselves! Prepare to talk about: Yes, that *is* Rainn Wilson; how long until CBS decides to just air the episodes on TV (sorry to be a pessimist)?   Rachel is the product manager of SideReel, and Michael J. Fox will always be her #1 Teen Wolf because she is old. p { text-align: justify; }
