Review of The Grinder

30 minutes

THE GRINDER, starring Emmy Award nominee Rob Lowe (“Parks and Recreation,” “The West Wing”) and Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award nominee Fred Savage (“The Wonder Years”), follows a famous TV lawyer (Lowe) who, after his hit series, “The Grinder,” is canceled, moves back home and joins his brother (Savage) at their family’s real-life law firm – despite having no formal education, no bar certification, no license to practice and no experience in an actual courtroom.

My high school crush....Rob Lowe..whose chiseled jawline I can never forget after selling many a meticulously drawn, accurate portrait of him to my high school classmates. He had my heart for real. However, his acting skills were never academy award winning material. Yet there is an element of surprise that is entertaining in this scenario. Who knew he could play the straight guy to the comic drollness of another puberty hero Fred Savage. This comedy is not the average comedy. It is dry and as many have said 'over the top' and surreal in many ways. It has a down-home feel to it reminiscent of many 80s and 90s family sitcoms. With a twist: a crazy premise. Family reunited with ever competitive, slightly immature, good natured but egocentric famous actor brother. A Law firm ties the characters together, with cinematic quality of a 'Cagney and Lacey' or 'Law and Order'. Yet while it seems terribly overly-dramatic and waning in hilarity, its obvious flaws are actually what makes it work as a likeable distraction from real world problems. Wouldn't give it a great rating, it may not last even two seasons, Yet, I'm entertained nevertheless and i have laughed out loud at the bravado of the writers to write such fluff yet somehow it works out. More honestly, anything to look into the depths of those true-blue eyes of Rob Lowe is worth it. Man has he aged well!
