Review of The Last Tycoon

60 minutes

Inspired by the life of film mogul Irving Thalberg, on whom the book’s protagonist Monroe Stahr was based, The Last Tycoon centers on Stahr, Hollywood’s first wunderkind studio executive in the 1930s as he climbs to the height of power pitting him against his mentor and current head of the studio Pat Brady, a character based on Louis B. Mayer.

The Last Tycoon is a period drama that follows the movie business in the mid 1930's. The show defines the politics that develop in this pre-war era with Germany and struggles of the depression. This particular drama is quite slow but develops into a nicely drawn picture of grace and lust. The cast fits their roles perfectly and the script is decent but at some times dry. I still recommend this series to the period drama fanatic.
