The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Reviews & Ratings

Fridays, 3:00 AM ET on Amazon

60 minutes

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is written and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls) and executive produced by Daniel Palladino (Family Guy) and Sherman-Palladino. It’s 1958 Manhattan and Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan, House of Cards) has everything she’s ever wanted—the perfect husband, two kids, and an elegant Upper West Side apartment perfect for hosting Yom Kippur dinner. But her perfect life suddenly takes an unexpected turn and Midge discovers a previously unknown talent—one that changes her life forever. She charts a course that takes her from her comfortable life on Riverside Drive, through the basket houses and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she storms the world of stand-up comedy…a course that will ultimately lead her to a spot on Johnny Carson’s couch.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is perhaps the best show I've ever seen. And it can be the best show you've ever seen too; all you have to do is watch it, and it will charm its way into your top spot all on its own.

I've been watching TV for a long time, and I honestly cant say I've ever encountered such consistently masterful writing as Mrs. Maisel. You know how some shows have that one character thats really fantastic that we all love? Like Walter from Fringe, Ichabod from Sleepy Hollow, or Brian from Limitless? Well; Almost every character in Mrs. Maisel is like that, especially Mrs. Maisel herself. One of the most likeable characters I've ever encountered. She will undeniably win you over with her strength of character, her determination, her sharp witt, and her penchant to speak her mind in a time where it was frowned upon for women to be vocal. Whats most remarkable about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is depth of emotions it draws out of you as you watch. When Midge is being funny, you want to get up and clap, chanting "Billy D! Billy D!" and when she's bombing, you feel like someone tied you down and forced you to watch curb your enthusiasm even though you couldn't handle it. I've never been much of a vocal tv-watcher, but when I watched Maisel, I was on the edge of my seat, in tears, beaming with joy, or commenting out loud how insanely good the show is, every couple of minutes.
It's also worth mentioning that the acting is beyond stellar. Seeing Tony Shaloob as Abe Weissman, the overbearing Jewish father makes me miss Monk terribly. And Rachel's performance as Mrs. Maisel is so entrancing that I am able to forget she's quite likely the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, and just focus on the show and her character. That's saying something.

Watch this show, if you never watch anything else in your life.

The storytelling is so light I could watch 1000 episodes all at once! Also, it's so ironical at the same time is so realistic to our time.

My first issue with this show is that is is listed as both a comedy and drama. Drama, yes; comedy, no... a hard "NO". I didn't find any humour in this show.
My second issue is the unrealistic portrayal of New York. I understand that this is not a documentary but come on, are you telling me that there were zero people of colour in New York in the 1950s? The most diverse this show got in the pilot was when they talked about ordering Chinese food or having curry... I wonder who was going to cook that food and in what restaurant?

While I am not one of those people who demands token representation, I do expect REALISTIC representation. Unless the show is only about a family who stays at home all day, then I would not expect to see diversity, but they do leave the house several times, for work and social events yet everyone is 100% white? Not even a background actor. It's set in 1950 not 1900. Ad in 2017 when the show was made one would think that they would have been more self aware.

Well hot sh#$, as I'm typing this a black woman showed up in the pilot. Unnatural and clearly a token rather than being actually reflective of the demographics at the time.
