Review of The Mentalist

60 minutes

A detective who can mind read--well, not really. However, Detective Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) does posses acute observation skills--skills he honed as a mentalist--and uses them to solve cases for the California Bureau of Investigation.

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this series. The main character is one of the most watchable people on TV, with his combination of observation skills, charm and determination to avenge the death of his wife and daughter. This is a rare protagonist. The ability of Simon Baker to pull off this role, season after season, has been amazing. A role of a lifetime, just like Monk role was for Tony Shalhoub. The writers and directors for The Mentalist never let me down, and I am quick to spot laziness in these endeavors. It was never formulaic, in my opinion. It is great to watch, first time or rerun.
