'The New Adventures of Old Christine' Season 5, Episode 16 - 'Somehow, Subway' Recap

Ah, the beauty of farcical theatre. The simplest of tasks laid to waste by the outrageous shenanigans and outlandish responses of one brilliant comedian. In this case, Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She needed help from no one in the cast to make her extended stay on the subway platform funnier and funnier to watch as the episode progressed. That's good news because Richard, Matthew and Barb were pretty busy back at Christine's place ... doing stuff. At least the writers bothered to give us a reason that Matthew is still hanging out and eating at Christine's as if he lives there. The catfighting between Richard and Matthew about all their roommate annoyances with one another certainly brought me back to my roommate days. Man, do things get annoying. Barb's role this week was to spread the message that texting while driving is incredibly dangerous. No matter where you are. I certainly didn't expect her to come flying into the scene when she did. 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' - 'Sweet Charity' Recap Season 5, Episode 15

As much as I don't want to compare Julia Louis-Dreyfus' new show to her old one, I can't help but notice some similarities with this week's installment. Much of what made 'Seinfeld' work was in the way people outside of that core four reacted to just how deplorable those people really were. When we were in that inner circle with them, it all sort of worked and we didn't really realize how bad they were. Now, Christine Cambpell is far more obviously a terrible person than Elaine Benes, but as with 'Seinfeld,' we often don't realize just how horrible she is. Even moreso, when put in the context of Christine, Richard and Matthew, Barb often comes across as the only sane and rational one. And yet, when you put these people out and on display in front of so-called normal people, they simply look awful. Ultimately, though, it's not even the question of what to do with the $2,000 Barb and Christine surprisingly made in profit at the gym that was their moral conundrum. It was how they handled themselves throughout the episode as they struggled with the decision. Really, it was mostly Christine struggling with her guilt over not being seen as a good person, and the $2000 designer dress she really wanted. 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' - 'A Family Unfair' Recap Season 5, Episode 14

Christine went into full crazy mode this week, after virtually the entire extended family showed up for New Christine's ultrasound. There was a lot of fun to be had with everyone trying to explain to the doctor, guest star Tim Meadows, how they were all connected to one another, and it made me realize that sitcoms -- or at least this one -- are more like soap operas than we may realize. The marriages and relationships and romantic entanglements of this particular cast go beyond the unusual and into the realm of disturbing. And yet, it all seemed to progress so naturally over the last four-and-a-half seasons. That must be why it's so easy for soap fans to accept the crazy things that happen on their shows. And their crazy characters can't be nearly as crazy as Old Christine. While it would be potentially funny for Christine to get pregnant and go through the experiences of pregnancy and infancy with her, I think it was the right move for her and Richard to realize they're too old to be having babies at this point. As they brilliantly pointed out, they don't know where Ritchie is half the time anyway. That's something we've talked about when watching the show; wondering where Ritchie is at during many of the scenes. To Read More Click Here If You Missed This Episode Watch It Here Online Now

Review: The New Adventures of Old Christine - Truth or Dare Season 5, Episode 13

It's always nice to see that the men Christine falls for are as damaged as she is. Well, one of her suitors tonight is anyway. Things continue developing intimately between Christine and Max (Eric McCormack), until she gets a text from Mr. Harris. You remember Mr. Harris, don't you? Ritchie's former teacher who was so gorgeous that Matthew and Richard developed weird fixations on him as well. That's right. Blair Underwood is back, reprising his role as Mr. Harris. And while he remains as handsome as ever, things couldn't be more complicated between him and Christine as they were tonight. First of all, Christine only agreed to go out with him on a dare from Max, while he only wanted to date her to get back at some girl who dissed him 25 years ago in high school. Thus, he wanted to take Christine to his 25th reunion to get revenge, however it is that is supposed to work. To Read More Click Here If You Missed This Episode Watch It Here Online Now

Review: The New Adventures of Old Christine - A Whale of a Tale Season 5, Episode 12

The title pretty much gives it all away, if you didn't see the promos. I saw them, and yet I must have forgotten them, because I was still in for a surprise when Eric McCormack bent over to help Christine with her flat tire. Things have been jumping around a bit with this series, as if we're getting things somewhat out of order. Either that, or they just really trying to make things self-contained. Sometimes, they act as if Matthew is still living at Christine's, like the last new episode, and then he's back at his new place with Richard. But when they're here, there's no indicating that Richard and New Christine are expecting. Instead, Richard is completely focused on the bachelor pad aspect of it. The new girl in Matthew's life was written pretty well, particularly in how much she was into Matthew -- even after catching him sniffing her bra -- and how much she was clearly made uncomfortable by "Rick." Recap Season 5: Episode 11: It's Beginning to Stink a Lot Like Christmas

Christine gets cajoled into going to the neighborhood Christmas block party by Lucy, Matthew's old girlfriend that he's started dating again. It's a great party and Christine fits in well, but when she sees her neighbor's husband kissing another woman, she's confused. She tells her new friend who gets mad at her for being so "judgy", turns out the neighborhood is filled with swingers. Richard and New Christine introduce Ritchie to New Christine's crazy family Christmas celebration called Kinderclausen. It's got lots of weird traditions, like only new babies get store-bought presents. Ritchie doesn't like it, so to appease him, New Christine mentions another Kinderclausen tradition where the oldest child gets to name the new baby. Ritchie decides to name the new baby X-box 360, because that's what he really wants. Also, Matthew and Lucy, only recently reunited, break up again because of Lucy's sense of reality: Matthew can't deal with the fact she truly believes in Santa Claus. Review: The New Adventures of Old Christine - Old Christine Meets Young Frankenstein

When a bully is revealed at the school Little Ritchie attends, Christine is clearly worried that her son is being victimized. But while Old Christine followed the traditional sitcom formula for a bit at the beginning, by the time we reached the end of the episode, it had gone somewhere only Christine Campbell can take it. Even better we got a surprise return, though it's something I've kind of been waiting for all season, and a hilarious guest appearance by Amy Sedaris. I can't understand why Sedaris hasn't blown up even bigger than she has. If Michael Strahan can get a big network comedy built around him, why they hell can't Amy Sedaris? She took what could have been a pretty ordinary guest appearance, and turned it into a powerhouse performance all on its own through sheer force of will and talent. As soon as it was revealed that there was a bully, we knew it was Little Ritchie. After seeing what Christine had given him for lunch (ketchup packets, cheese and a bagel), it's no wonder he's hitting up some other kid for lunch money. And yet, when asked about it, I love his enthusiastic response: "I know! Isn't it great!" He was so proud of himself. To Read More Click Here . If You Missed This Episode Watch It Here Online Now
