'The Office' Season 9: Mindy Kaling returns for premiere episode

When Mindy Kaling signed a deal to create her own show, FOX's "The Mindy Project," fans of her character on "The Office" had to wonder what would become of Kelly Kapoor. At the Television Critics Association press tour on Monday in Los Angeles, Kaling confirmed that she would be returning to "The Office" to give Kelly Kapoor an exit strategy."I'm headed back, I think I'm going to be in the premiere which I'm really excited about, and maybe another episode," she tells the press. "That was great. I got so attached to that character, even though I got maybe a line every episode, it's fun to see what's going to happen to Kelly."When asked whether fans of "The Office" will enjoy "The Mindy Project," Kaling laughs. "We're hoping for a larger [audience] like, prison inmates and the elderly," she says. "Places where the TV is just on," adds showrunner Matt Warburton.More seriously, Kaling says, "I'm... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/07/the-office-season-9-mindy-kaling-returns-for-premiere-episode.html

'The Office' spinoff seeks its cast: Meet Dwight Schrute's siblings

If the Dwight-focused "Office" spinoff goes ahead at NBC, we'll soon be seeing several more Schrutes on the air. Zap2it has obtained the casting breakdown for four series regulars who will join Dwight (Rainn Wilson) on the show, which has Dwight and his siblings inheriting a large family farm and bed & breakfast -- provided Dwight can convince his brother and sister to join him. That may not be super-easy. According to the casting notes, Dwight's sister Fannie left the Schrute fold as soon as she could and has been living in Boston. Her personality is pretty much the opposite of Dwight's -- she's described as "grounded with a smart, ironic sense of humor and a great heart." She also has a 9-year-old son, Cameron, who's described as a "weird 'Rushmore'-like kid," and sounds reminiscent of Manny from "Modern Family."The spinoff cast will also include Dwight's great uncle Heinrich Manheim, who embodies the sketchy German past... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/06/the-office-spinoff-seeks-its-cast-meet-dwight-schrutes-siblings.html

'The Office' makes B.J. Novak a part-time employee

"The Office" will free Ryan Howard to look for other jobs this season: B.J. Novak will no longer be a full-time member of the show's cast and backstage staff.Novak is likely to make some on-screen appearances in the coming season, but TV Guide reports he's no longer part of the regular cast. Novak's contract, along with those of Jenna Fischer, Ed Helms and John Krasinski, expired at the end of last season, and while the other three signed new deals, Novak did not. Novak was also an "Office" writer and producer, and he's done with those roles as well. He'll still be welcome in the writers room and could direct (he's helmed five episodes), but he would do so as a freelancer. He was an executive producer of fellow "Office" departee Mindy Kaling's FOX comedy pilot "The Mindy Project" but didn't join the show's staff when it was picked up."The Office" is still resetting itself... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/06/the-office-makes-bj-novak-a-part-time-employee.html

'The Office': Steve Carell says he will not be returning as Michael Scott

Steve Carell rode off into the sunset as Michael Scott on "The Office" in 2011, heading to Colorado with his lady love Holly. But he tells the Los Angeles Times that will probably be the last fans see of Michael and Holly."[A guest appearance] hasn't been discussing," says Carell. "Do you really think that people want to see Michael Scott again? I think the people who say they want to see Michael Scott reappear would be ultimately slightly disappointed.""I think you always wish for something that you don't sincerely want to come true," he continues. "And I think in a way it's better to imagine where Michael and Holly are at this point than actually see it ... It's like, once you graduate from college, you don't want to be that guy two years out who's sleeping on the dorm floor."What do you think, "Office" fans? Is he right? Or were you holding out hope... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/06/the-office-steve-carell-says-he-will-not-be-returning-as-michael-scott.html

TV ratings: 'Big Bang Theory' finale tops 'American Idol' Thursday, 'Vampire Diaries' steady

Fast National ratings for Thursday, May 10, 2012The season finale of "The Big Bang Theory" was down from its numbers last week, but it was still the night's top show among adults 18-49 and beat "American Idol" by almost a full point in their common half-hour. "Idol" was pretty much even with last week, as were the season finales of "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation" last week.Elsewhere, "Grey's Anatomy" continued its late-season positive run by posting its best numbers in three months. The finale of "The Vampire Diaries" held steady with last week's ratings, as did "The Secret Circle."Network numbers coming shortly. Thursday hour by hour:8 p.m.FOX: "American Idol" results (15.1 million viewers, 9.2/16 households)CBS: "The Big Bang Theory" season finale (13.3 million, 8.0/14)/"Rules of Engagement" (8.85 million, 5.4/9)ABC: "Missing" (6.4 million, 4.2/7)NBC: "Community" (3.1 million, 2.0/4)/"30 Rock" (2.95 million, 1.8/3)The CW: "The Vampire Diaries" season finale (2.5 million, 1.6/3)18-49 leader: "The Big Bang... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/05/tv-ratings-big-bang-theory-finale-tops-american-idol-thursday-vampire-diaries-steady.html

'The Office' Finale Resets The Show, James Spader Departs

" The Office " (Thu., 9 p.m. ET on NBC) finale seemed determine to right the ship a bit. Some viewers feel the show got a little off track this season, in large part due to the over-the-top and unpredictable antics of new Sabre CEO Robert California ( James Spader ). The return of David Wallace, who officially asserted himself as the new owner of Dunder-Mifflin -- now free from the Sabre umbrella -- not only put Andy back in the manager's office, but also signaled a return to the earlier days of "The Office." There's no need for big stars to fill those roles because the show is about the everyday and the mundane. With the core cast signing up for a ninth season, "The Office" seems a lock to be picked up again. So maybe a new season that refocuses on the happenings in the office will bring back that spark that made the show a hit in the first place. Spade was certainly a notable presence on the show, but did he manage to outweird even Steve Carell's Michael Scott? While Michael infamously kissed Oscar during his tenure, Robert California's farewell kiss on Andy's lips was still a little unusual. As for Nellie, she managed to convince Andy to keep her on in some kind of made-up job, so Catherine Tate may well continue her own brand of crazy into next year, albeit in a diminished capacity. On the more down-to-earth front, Dwight gave away free family portraits in order to get a DNA sample from Angela's baby, in hopes of proving that it's his. Results, though, will have to wait until next season. Rainn Wilson is looking to develop a spin-off for the character of Dwight. Could Angela and baby follow? 'The Office': John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and Ed Helms sign for Season 9

Three stars of "The Office" are keeping their jobs at Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch.Ed Helms, Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski have all signed new contracts to return for Season 9 of the NBC comedy, Deadline reports. Their deals had been set to expire after this season, which ends Thursday (May 10). Krasinski and Helms may get some time off next season to accommodate their movie schedules, the report says, but keeping the leads around can only help the show, which went through an overhaul following Steve Carell's departure last season and probably couldn't afford another wholesale change. As it stands, Mindy Kaling (who's also a writer and producer) is leaving for a FOX comedy, and Rainn Wilson is developing a potential Dwight-centered spinoff with showrunner Paul Lieberstein, who's also stepping down.(Helms, incidentally, is also a guest star in the pilot for Kaling's show, "It's Messy.")B.J. Novak's "Office" contract is also up, but he hasn't started... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/05/the-office-john-krasinski-jenna-fischer-and-ed-helms-sign-for-season-9.html
