The Playboy Club: What Went Wrong

It took years for The Playboy Club to hop into primetime. It took NBC three weeks to kill it. Quick cancellations are nothing new in TV, but the rapid demise of The Playboy Club might serve as a cautionary tale for programmers as they depend more on familiar franchises and icons to attract distracted viewers. With so much competition for the attention of viewers, network execs are looking for anything that might give them an edge in marketing and awareness — which is why so many remakes with familiar titles are hitting the air. Eddie Cibrian Defends 'The Playboy Club,' Says 'We Get Naked ... All the Time' (VIDEO)

'The Playboy Club' has been attracting a lot of negative attention lately, as complaints from the PTC and low ratings have put the glitzy '60s drama on cancellation watch . Eddie Cibrian went on 'Rachael Ray' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) to defend the show against charges of misogyny, but couldn't bring himself to take issue with claims that it's too sexy. 'The Playboy Club' Loses Advertisers, PTC Calls for Immediate Cancellation

Will it soon be time to bid farewell to 'The Playboy Club?' Yes, if the members of The Parents Television Council (PTC) have their way. The PTC has been campaigning against NBC's new drama series for months, urging advertisers and NBC affiliates to drop it. Now the PTC claims that seven advertisers have already withdrawn from 'The Playboy Club' and is calling for the series -- which the pressure group says "objectifies and degrades women" -- to be cancelled immediately. Asking members to put pressure on the remaining sponsors of the show (Capital One, Samsung and Chrysler), PTC President Tim Winters said the group wants to know "if their corporate values are in step with those of the Playboy brand." //www.aoltv.com/2011/09/29/the-playboy-club-loses-advertisers-ptc-calls-for-cancellation/
