Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #12 Anime Review

With the girls having done a fair bit of journeying in the last several episodes and encountering many things, the show is opting to move them back to a more familiar location, home. Their initial journey started with a bit of bonding and it got them to grow it over the course of time, which was weak and simple and largely ineffective in making us actually like the characters because there’s so little to them in general outside of the barest of archetypes. They made some fun discoveries along the way and I’ll admit there were some decent moments surrounded by mostly dull or interminable pieces that left me banging my head on the desk. But now that they’re heading home, things have a small sense of change about it as it returns to that familiar locale. READ MORE...

Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #11 Anime Review

Though there were some cute moments previously, largely revolving around the scale of the Fire Drake dragon, Zettai Boei Leviatan continues to be a real drain on my viewing schedule. Though I know it’s going to go only so far and I’ve resigned myself to it, there’s always that moment of hope that it might just surprise as it nears the end here with what it will do. Of course, I’m pretty jaded on this series so I’m not expecting much, and what we get at the beginning here pretty much reinforces that as we see the girls dealing with events after the volcano by returning to the ruins and having to deal with more silliness there at first that has them running around, fending off various creatures such as the Toripu here and just generally flailing about in their way. Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #09 Anime Review

With the girls having taken a few lumps recently with all that they’ve encountered, they’re now ready to move on to the next phase of their journey. One that takes them to Rajima Volcano, where there’s some welcome hot springs that will help heal those wounds and generally reinvigorate them. Getting them to go to a place of hot baths doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch and it’s the kind of opportunity that serves to have them show off a bit more skin and get some down time, which is needed after all the action as of late, right? Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #08 Anime Review

Zettai Boei Leviatan has moved along slowly to be sure and the previous episode just made it feel all the more so with the way the group simply trekked through the desert. It did bring in a bit of background material that helps to flesh out some of the bonds that the girls all have with each other that they weren’t even aware of, going back to when they were children and the boy they all knew, but it also shifted to some action after Leviatan gained her weapon once again in the seemingly mystical ruins they came across. The downside is that there’s a bad guy there to fight, the Lucasite, and it’s pretty intense for this show as we see its first attack send Leviatan sprawling with blood splattering everywhere. Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #07 Anime Review

With the first six episodes telling such a weak and poorly animated tale, it’s little surprise that the seventh episode doesn’t really do all that much different. With the trio walking along, and Syrop floating along as well, the desert trek of the series is something that can definitely be a bit mind numbing overall, just because you know that someone is going to get all whiny and petulant about the whole ordeal as they make their ways towards the Lucasite. These aren’t exactly the most engaging of characters to begin with, but when you put them in a situation like this, they become even less appealing since it’s all about the whining in the end. Well, outside of Jormungand since she just moves right along with her strength. READ MORE...

Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #06 Anime Review

Zettai Boei Leviatan managed to spend an episode previously that was all about the girls getting to know each other better as they took a bit of a vacation. Which was admittedly a decent episode, but within the sliding scale of how bad this series is in general, so it doesn’t exactly raise things all that much. What it did do towards the end was hint a bit more about what Leviatan is after in dealing with her brother who had gone missing and giving her a bit more focus. That’s been edged into the series slowly since early on and it’s given her at least a little bit more motivation than the others, but it hasn’t been enough to really make it an engaging piece since it took five episodes to really get things admitted and clear from her with what’s going on. And even that was fairly weak overall. READ MORE...

Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #05 Anime Review

With the show having brought in a touch more background material in the previous episode, bringing the dragon back in to play and having the girls work together as a group, the series has started to flesh out a bit. Which is good since it’s basically been a bare bones work from the start and even those were malnutritioned. It also worked a fair bit since we got to see the way men factor into this world and the issues there while using Syrop as the key point to do it so that she could overcome the issues in helping men. The dynamic between the two genders is interesting and seeing that there’s some real division among some about how much to interact with the other gives it a different feeling. READ MORE...

Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #04 Anime Review

After spending an episode in the belly of the beast, in quite the literal way, the girls have now managed to come together a bit more. That they finally worked together well and did what was needed helped a lot in making them feel more like a team. But it didn’t exactly make the show a must-watch yet either as there wasn’t exactly much compelling with the low rent animation and bland beyond words story. Just the CG animation for the dragon alone practically made me want to turn it off. But with that done, the girls are back to their normal lives for the moment and we see some of how they deal with things, such as Leviatan’s worry over where her brother disappeared to and Jormungand’s home life with all the kids that she takes care of, which definitely gets Syrop interested in what’s going on as there’s so much food. Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #03 Anime Review

With the three girls having come together in full in the previous episode, and dealing with the icky nature of the swamp and all, they’re now ready to start moving forward a bit. Maybe. With the creature that has surfaced there, which looks all mean and evil, it turns out that she really just wants their help. If they can put some clothes on first. It turns out that she’s been feeling really off as of late, probably related to the other larger world changing events that are going on in the background that is the impetus for this series, and the creature is requesting that the trio and Syrop head into her mouth and down into her belly to figure out what’s going wrong down there. It’s not exactly a fantastic voyage, nor something that the girls are all that eager to deal with ether. READ MORE...

Zettai Boei Leviatan Episode #02 Anime Review

The opening episode of Leviatan was interesting in some ways, especially for how slow it moved and some of the parallels that you could see with other well known series like Magic Knight Rayearth. But while it had its interesting bits along the way, it was just such an odd work in others that it felt like it wasn’t sure what it wanted to do and where it wanted to go, even though we had such a big event occurring in the background here. Everything is in a state where it should be on full alert, but so many people are just blasé about everything or unaware of it that it came down to a feeling that nobody cared about the end of the world. Except for some cute girls, of course. READ MORE...
