American Music Awards
Sundays, 8:00 PM ET on ABC
An annual American music awards show created by Dick Clark. Unlike the Grammys, which are awarded on the basis of votes by members of the Recording Academy, the AMAs are determined by a poll of the public and music buyers.
The American Music Awards were created in 1974 as a counterpoint to the Grammys but somewhere along the way, founder Dick Clark notes, "they became an institution of their own." The AMAs focus on pretty much the same musical turf as the Grammys new songs of the previous year. But rather than having winners chosen by members of the music industry, they are se-lected by music listeners.
