The Tribe Reviews & Ratings

Following the outbreak of a virus, the entire adult population has been wiped out leaving their children to survive alone in a post-apocalyptic unnamed city. Most of the children have formed tribes, each with their own distinct makeup and clothes. Each of these tribes follow different philosophies which invariably lead to conflict.

The Tribe is a show I really enjoyed when I was younger. It's hard to grasp what's so good about it, to me I think it was more about the fact that it was one of the first tv-series that I watched. I thought the characters were so cool with their faces painted and the whole idea that "the mall rats" came together as a tribe and stuck by each other and protected each other.

My absolute favorite characters are Bray and Amber, the leaders of the main tribe, "the mall rats". But I genuinely like many of the other characters as well and as this was my first series the fact that the characters personalities had so many layers to them was really fascinating to me.

Looking at the series today I see that the acting may not have been the best and the special effects aren't all that great. I honestly don't know if kids today would enjoy the show but to me these negatives don't matter, it will always have a special place in my heart.

The Tribe is one of those shows best watched with nostalgia.
A post-apocalyptic teen drama from New Zealand, the acting is uneven and the world construction is inconsistent. I think the patchy acting can be forgiven in a show with a massive ensemble cast of actual teens, almost no Dawson casting here, pulled from a relatively small population. The inconsistent world construction is probably related to the show being an unexpected worldwide hit pre-social media.
All that said, it is a hard show to jump into for a contemporary audience who doesn't already hold a fondness for the characters. In the show the world ended in the late 90's ... and that makes the whole thing very dated.

Oh, how much I loved this show as a child. I recently rewatched all 5 seasons of it and even then I still enjoyed the show very much. The clothing, make-up, music etc. may seem pretty weird now, but for that time the show was very high quality. I'll definitely keep rewatching the shows every few years :)
