What?! Those Chinese gymnasts were not 16? Say it isn't so!

Just the other day SideReel presented you with a handy dandy Olympic Scandal Roundup and now we have another one to add to the list:

The AP has dug up an old news story from a Chinese newspaper featuring one of the gymnasts on the gold medal-winning team which appeared 9 months before the Olympics and reported that she was 13! As you all may know, the minimum age to compete in this event in the Olympics is 16.

Curiously, this article is already no longer accessible on that same Chinese website where it was originally found.

China has maintained that all of the girls on the team are 16, which their passports state and the International Olympic Committee accepts as valid proof of age.

I don't see why the Chinese would even want to lie with age. I mean, wouldn't gymnasts who actually are 16 have already that edge in their skills? And some on the Chinese team did look rather young...
