SideReel Review - The Ides of March starring George Clooney & Ryan Gosling by Yael Tygiel

George Clooney's latest directorial project, The Ides of March is a thrilling, political, drama. Ryan Gosling (Drive, Crazy Stupid Love) is confidently in the lead as Stephen, a young (maybe even a little naive) campaign press secretary for Clooney's character, Governor Morris, while on a presidential candidacy trail. Clooney (Ocean's 11) himself takes a supporting role in this film, yet I easily admit that I'd vote Morris for President.

The story follows Stephen as he attempts to maneuver his way through the politics of, well, Politics. The initial scenes of the film were a bit slow, long, and slightly drawn out - which may possibly have been to help explain the basics of our government to those of us who are more interested in political thriller than the actual process of the US government - but once we got to the meat of the tale, the mystery and manipulations were excellent. We find our idealist, Stephen, suddenly in the center of a scandal, doing whatever he can to rectify the situation, as the people he trusts most turn on him and [screw] him over.

The Ides of March has a star-studded cast, including Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Marisa Tomei (Slums of Beverly Hills, The Wrestler, Crazy Stupid Love), and Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen, True Blood, Mildred Pierce) as the attractive, young, intern... I feel like that's all I need to say as explanation of her role, because we all know what happens to interns.

I can confidently state that I loved this movie - but take that with a grain of salt as I tend to be of the opinion that Evan Rachel Wood can do no wrong. Also, I'm prone to fancy a story with a good sex scandal.

If you enjoy political dramas, seeing gorgeous grown men squirm, and backstabbing then make sure you check out The Ides of March, based on a play by Beau Willimon, when hits theaters October 7th.

This movie is Rated R.
