'Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.' S2E13: One of Us

★ ★ ★

A revenge seeking Calvin Zabo gathered a not-so-merry bunch of mediocre "super" villains, the most impressive of them being Angar. But even with several villains taking up time this episode, there was little-to-no danger felt. As usual though, Karl McLachlan was fantastic to watch as Dr. Hyde and we got a little more insight on his background story.

Angar was probably the scariest of all the villains introduced. When he was mentioned to be able to knock out someone by merely whispering, that’s what I expected. But the dropped jaw scream was entirely better; the visual intensity of the superpower was fun to see.

However, there is something odd that comes from knowing that each of the villains in this episode aren’t supers, but are "enhanced". That being said, it’s odd that Karla Faye Gideon was even on the index at all. Her "powers" are just knives for nails. Not even Wolverine or X-23 type superpowers.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S2E13

It makes a lot of sense for Calvin Zabo to gather up other "enhanced" villains and give viewers a new term to throw around when discussing the origin of a villain’s powers. But unlike when we met him, this is a villain without a purpose. Although quippy and entertaining, Zabo without a "plan" is a pretty mundane villain. It was obvious that this wasn’t going to be a remotely powerful team, but even still it would have been better if they weren’t that tame.

Calvin Zabo was never a master plan kind of villain, so it was his spontaneity and rather insane goals which made him a terrifying threat. If only he had gotten the chance to be recruited by a powerful team of superpowers rather than the other way around. His getting teleported away by No-Eyes only shows that he would have been better off as a side story.

Having May’s ex come into the episode brought a very missed light-heartedness back to the show. Fitz and Simmons giggled over this; Skye asked the exact questions we wanted answers to in regards to the wedding. I miss Fitzsimmons. I miss it so much. I miss them being amazed with everything that came into the lab. I miss them laughing at their own inside jokes. At first they were symbiotic science geeks with that being their character development, and now that they're entirely different people it would be so great to see that relationship recuperate.

Nothing in this episode felt entirely essential to the rest of the season. While Dr. Andrew Garner was a welcome surprise that led to some really nice moments, Zabo and his team were disappointing and too easily defeated. There’s a difference between losing and having absolutely no chance at winning whatsoever.

Easter egg notice: Both Angar and Karla Faye Gideon are tied with Daredevil. Who knows, They may pop up!
