'Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.' S2E17: Melinda

★ ★ ★ ★ ½

The titular star of this week’s episode, May had her entire backstory exposed in excellently done flashbacks which tied in nicely with the Inhumans.

We’ve known for a long time that May was forever changed by what happened in Bahrain, where she saved an entire group of agents. The act of May killing a child, even though she was essentially evil, was appropriately dark and effective. The episode hit us on the nose with how May’s married life was affected by showing us a compare and contrast of May before and after the mission, but despite that her flashbacks were a great addition to the MCU history.

Agents of SHIELD S2E17

What Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has consistently done well is their ability to incorporate the material they are given into the lore of their world. Which is why Katya and Eva’s story became such an excellent cautionary tale. Not only did it have a profound effect on May and quite possibly change the outlook on Indexed people, but it darkened the Inhumans ever so slightly and filled them with a fear of both the outside world and their capabilities.

This episode handled its reveals very well. Katya turning out to be the villain could have been a slightly more menacing reveal than how it was handled, but the story itself was compelling. Then, Jiaying revealed who she was to Skye by telling Skye her birthday. Surprisingly, this reveal was shown the episode just after the one where Jiaying introduced herself to Skye. It seemed like their relationship was going to be a secret for some time, but Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s pacing sure as heck changed that.

Skye’s training scenes are always nice to watch. Each time Skye learns how to control her powers, they become more and more alluring. The Inhumans’ powers are such a nice addition to the show. While several of the superpowers we saw in season 1 weren’t so visually spectacular, these ones steal the spotlight every single time.

It was nice to see Gordon snap at Lincoln about Rayna’s appearance. It made him break from the calm and collected Gordon we’ve gotten to know and reveal one of his insecurities. While he’s come to accept it, you can tell he still has difficulty with it. I think Rayna’s growth as a character will be very interesting. For now, she’s just sitting around moping about her appearance, but now that we were given an idea of her power it’s going to be fun to see where it goes from here.
