The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of August 1, 2016

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.

Not Safe with Nikki Glaser: S1E19

Not Safe with Nikki Glaser

Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. on Comedy Central

Why: A smart, nimble comedian who appeared on fellow Last Comic Standing alum Amy Schumer's Comedy Central show and annihilated all challengers on @midnight before landing her own series on the network, Nikki Glaser describes herself as a "curious perv." Her show, which debuted in February, has become a safe space for funny conversations about things people are typically too shy to discuss. There are frequent trips into raunchy and silly territory, but Glaser is becoming just as comfortable tackling heavier topics, as in her July segment on campus rape. She and Fox Sports star Katie Nolan called out universities that seem to prioritize their sports programs over the safety of their female students. On this week's show, the mood lightens as guests Margaret Cho and Kurt Braunohler debunk common sexual stereotypes.

Prepare to talk about: The rise of women on Comedy Central; your new obsession with Nikki Glaser.

2016 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony

Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony

Friday at 7:30 p.m. on NBC

Why: Whether you care about sports or not, the opening ceremony of an Olympic Games is fun TV. You get to mock commentators' silly trivia, critique each country's uniform, and judge the host country's entertainers. And this time, there's the added risk that at any moment, the stadium could literally fall apart. Seriously, Rio is making Sochi look like a triumph of preparedness. There's air pollution, contaminated water, unfinished venues, uninhabitable athlete housing, security concerns, political tumult, protesters, doping controversies — oh, and Zika. Fun stuff! But even the most cynical, stone-hearted monster will find it difficult to stay snarky as elated athletes from more than 200 nations exuberantly parade in Maracana Stadium. And during such an anxious and divisive time for so many of us, two weeks of Olympic storylines may be just what we need to get through the summer.

Prepare to talk about: Zika, Zika, Zika; which American gymnast will dominate next season's Dancing With the Stars; Michael Phelps' last splash; the insane sex party that is the Olympic Village.

The Eric Andre Show: S4E1

The Eric Andre Show
(Season Premiere)

Friday at 11:59 p.m. on Adult Swim

Why: If you only know Eric Andre as the nerdy and/or sarcastic supporting characters he's played on shows like Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 and 2 Broke Girls, your mind will be blown by his expert trolling on his Adult Swim series. A parody of a public-access talk show, this is a tight 15 minutes of awkward, borderline offensive, and wickedly funny interviews and pranks. An American Borat with a talk show, André basically gets in trouble for a living and, at least when in his TV persona, gives zero f**ks. He recently made headlines — and enemies — when he disrupted an Alex Jones rally in Cleveland, egging on the conservative radio host's conspiracy-loving fans. It was genius promo for The Eric Andre Show's new season, which will feature everyone from Jack McBrayer and Howie Mandel to Amber Rose and TI, along with low-key co-host Hannibal Buress balancing Andre's barely contained intensity.

Prepare to talk about: Adult Swim's legal bills; Andre unleashing rats during a segment with fellow troll Stacey Dash.

So excited for the Rio olympics! Let's just hope the games are as entertaining as the pre-Olympics dramatics.
