The Peabody Voters Choose "Excellence"

Though they don't get quite as much attention as The Emmys or The Golden Globes, the Peabodys are considered by many to be the most prestigious award to receive in TV.

This seems to be with good reason, as they've chosen quite a deserving crop of shows to honor this year; Dexter, Mad Men, 30 Rock, Project Runway and The Colbert Report (note that 4 out of 5 of these air on cable...) are the biggest names that you'll recognize, though the full list of winners can be viewed here.

How did this particular list of shows come to be honored? According to the director of the awards, "The Peabody has only one criterion across the board and that's excellence. I'm often asked to define that and we realize that it's a subjective judgment in every case." Basically, the board chooses what they think is good and who are we to disagree?

Also of note: Project Runway is the first reality program to ever win a Peabody.

The Peabody Awards, now in their 67th year, are awarded by the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The actual ceremony will take place in June.
