I was excited to see this show returning. It was an extremely funny show in the past. Unfortunately, it fails the key benchmark of a TV sitcom: it's not funny. Although it seems to have a lot of the same people involved, especially Dianne English, it fails repeatedly to provide anything deserving of the volume level of the laughtrack, which is distractingly loud. Miles is the only character that provides consistent laughs although his character has not shown a bit of growth since last seen. The new tech nerd needs to disappear like Chuck. The actor playing Avery is not up to the role, which is a pretty poor role to begin with. It all makes me a little sad. Not all things get better with age.
Imagine Geraldo Rivera's "Opening Capone's Vault" extended from a one hour special to a multiple year series. All the cliffhanger excitement ginned up before each commercial only serves to make this show hopelessly shallow, much like their odds of success. I'll wait to read of their success in the the news, their continuing failures they can keep.
It's lasted long enough to become a parody. "Stars" are rarely in attendance. The show is populated by a combination of washed-up TV people, the latest Disney project and people the that are an appeal to whatever demographic they are trying to sell to. Did I mention ringers? The last several seasons have featured "Stars" with extensive dance training including professional dancing experience. Adding modern dancing to the mix which has no defined rules therefore cannot be judged objectively against ballroom doesn't help the balance. And to top it off, the most recent winner was the worst dancer of the season but had a national radio show to appeal for votes. Time to put this show out of it's misery, or our misery.
The first few seasons of this show set a new mark for network comedies. Funny, but capable of warmth. Silly, but never losing the humanity of the characters. Now it is tired, and desperately trying anything to be funny. It is mostly failing. The great comedies know when to quit. In this show's case, it was two seasons ago.
I enjoyed Season 1. It had very taut pacing and minimal soundtrack. The government angle was interesting. Season 2 is a bust. The new showrunner has turned it into a mess of warmed-over plots and scenes from countless other shows. The procedures are awful. No way Brian would be alive to make the movie. I've heard they're shopping it to other networks to bring it back from the dead but if it's more of Season 2, it can stay dead.
