Throwing down the gauntlet for future Undercovers, Shearwater showed up to our studio with a smoke machine and laser light show. They covered not only Bauhaus’ goth-rocker “Kick In The Eye” but also all of David Bowie’s Lodger. All of it. With Shearwater’s latest album, the excellent Jet Plane And Oxbow, Jonathan Meiburg has crafted a more assertive and political effort without losing sight of the band’s biggest strengths: Meiburg’s baritone; descriptive, nonlinear lyrics; and songs that reveal more with each listen. Those strengths come out here in what is surely one of the more dramatic Undercovers we’ve hosted.
