On paper, Joyce Manor and The National couldn’t be farther apart. For most of its history, California’s Joyce Manor dealt in mile-a-minute pop-punk, building songs that turned on a dime and rarely eclipsed more than a couple minutes. But with its latest album, Cody, the band slowed down and spread out, which makes sense that the band would take on “Mistaken For Strangers” from The National’s Boxer. Here, Joyce Manor skews closely to The National’s original while still injecting it with the band’s own propulsive force.
