Big Little Lies: "Once Bitten" Review

Reese Witherspoon might've owned the first few episodes of HBO's Big Little Lies, but the focus of episode five, "Once Bitten," was on Nicole Kidman's Celeste and Shailene Woodley's Jane, the most troubled of the Monterey, Calif. mothers at the center of the miniseries. Celeste had begun seeing a therapist with her abusive husband, Perry (Alexander Skarsgard), to help with their marriage. But when Perry couldn't attend one of their sessions, Celeste slowly (and reluctantly) started opening up to the therapist. She talked about their passion, but also hinted at the physical harm he'd caused her—even right before he'd left on his latest business trip. At first she flat-out denied that he hurt her when the therapist asked, but eventually conceded that he did. It was almost like Celeste only felt safe opening up about the violence when the therapist told her she'd noticed signs in Perry that it wasn't Celeste tattling on him, that it wasn't the doctor being "unethical" since she's supposed to be treating the both of them.
