'Black Sails' premiere: Hannah New says Eleanor's sexuality is secondary to her cause

"Black Sails" premiered Saturday (Jan. 25) on Starz, kicking off a pirate adventure as these sailors of the high seas search for treasure in an elusive Spanish galleon. But pirates are not all viewers encounter on and around the island of New Providence. Hannah New is Eleanor Guthrie, who basically runs the island and who New says she was excited to play because Eleanor is "a proper ball-breaker."As viewers will see in the first couple episodes, Eleanor has an on-going relationship with Max (Jessica Parker Kennedy) and there are references to Eleanor's previous relationship with Charles Vane (Zach McGowan). New says that the show hasn't felt the need to define Eleanor's sexuality, though it does play an important role in her life on the island. "Obviously we define the specific relationship between the two people, but I don't think the show in any way defines sexuality or defines the notion of what it means to be... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2014/01/black-sails-premiere-hannah-new-says-eleanors-sexuality-is-secondary-to-her-cause.html

Starz Re-Creates the Perilous World of Pirates in Black Sails

If you've watched a pirate movie, you've seen the stunt where the captain balances precariously atop a ship's mast, pierces its sail with his cutlass, grabs the hilt with both hands and slides fearlessly down to the deck. Daredevil Doublas Fairbanks Sr. originated the move in 1926's The Black Pirate . It's as ubiquitous on screen as an adventurer swinging from the rigs. But the dusty sea dogs of the new Starz period drama Black Sails would call it bloody foolish — unless cracked...   //www.tvguide.com/News/_television/genres/starz-Black-Sails-1076535.aspx?rss=breakingnews

'Black Sails' Luke Arnold: John Silver's secret is he'll kill you, 'but he does it with a smile'

"Black Sails" kicks off Saturday, Jan. 25 with a premiere episode that sets up a season-long race for a huge treasure, John Silver at the heart of it. Star Luke Arnold tells Zap2it at the 2014 TCA winter press tour that while Silver is quick with a smile, he's just as cutthroat as the other pirates."Silver's interesting. I think maybe because when we meet him in the beginning, he's not a pirate, he's a sailor, and he maybe doesn't appear as brutal as some of the other characters," says Arnold. "But he's just as ruthless as the rest of them. He's actually one of the first people on the show to take someone's life -- but he does it with a smile. I think that's the secret of Silver.""No one here is a nefarious character, creating anarchy for no reason," Arnold continues. "It's all a survival situation. It's like a political thriller, but you don't... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2014/01/black-sails-luke-arnold-john-silvers-secret-is-hell-kill-you-but-he-does-it-with-a-smile.html

'Black Sails' Zach McGowan: Charles Vane is not a villain 'in his own mind'

Starz is about to launch a new swashbuckling, high-seas adventure in "Black Sails," a sort-of prequel to "Treasure Island" that sees literary characters Long John Silver and Captain Flint plus real-life pirates Captain Charles Vane, Anne Bonny and Calico Jack Rackham living and working (as it were) in and around Nassau, Bahamas, which is overseen by proprietor Eleanor Guthrie.Zach McGowan, formerly of Showtime's "Shameless," is Vane, one of the captains determined to find the gold by any means necessary and very much at odds with Silver and Captain Flint. But he tells Zap2it that he doesn't see Vane as the villain of the piece. "He is definitely not a villain in his own mind," says McGowan, "and I do not see him as a villain. I see him no more as a villain than a lion who eats a gazelle is a villain. This is very much a place where the laws of the jungle... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2014/01/black-sails-zach-mcgowan-charles-vane-is-not-a-villain-in-his-own-mind.html

There Are Treasures to be Found in Starz’s ‘Black Sails’

Pirates are cool. This is a simple fact known to all those with even a hint of a rebellious spirit, however the myths surrounding pirates have become watered down by Hollywood over the years. Enter Starz’s Black Sails , a brutal, gorgeous and at times humorous look at swashbucklers and their politics. Within the opening moments, when a navel ship is raided by Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his crew, it becomes apparent this isn’t a Disneyfied look at pirates. The raid is quick and unrelenting, but when it ends there is humanity to be found in these pillagers seeking to live by their own rules. Gates (Mark Ryan) chooses among what’s left of the naval ship’s crew to join their ranks– one infamous troublemaker lies about being a cook to come aboard. Their switch between fierce men of the seas and regular people with jobs, lives and worries is done with such ease, I never stopped to wonder if I might be rooting for the wrong side. 'Black Sails': 'Treasure Island' will hopefully connect, Season 2 being filmed

If you're not excited about Starz's new drama "Black Sails" yet, it's time to start getting there. The pirate drama isn't your typical bodice ripper, but instead combines fiction with history in creating arguably the most fun pirate story in current pop culture. "Pirates of the Caribbean," this is not. Starz brought out the cast and producers of "Black Sails" to the TCA 2014 winter press tour to promote its Jan. 25 premiere date. Though it's not yet premiered Season 1, the second season has started production. The Season 2 renewal was announced over the summer, but Starz says the decision was as much about capitalizing on time as much as it was a vote of confidence in the show. Two episodes of Season 2 have been filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, because it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. "Black Sails" explores the "golden age of piracy," and combines real-life pirates like Charles... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2014/01/black-sails-treasure-island-will-hopefully-connect-season-2-being-filmed.html
