Making an Argument that “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is as Good as “Seinfeld”

There are a lot of ways in which a person can make the argument that Curb Your Enthusiasm is as good as Seinfeld if not better. One of the biggest arguments is that Curb is on HBO whereas Seinfeld never made it that far. What this means is that Curb could move past the boundaries that Seinfeld never did as far as language, content, and overall subject matter that audiences enjoyed. Essentially they’re both shows about absolutely nothing, meaning that there’s no driving plot and no central idea to the whole thing. But somehow people were attracted to both shows partly because of this and partly because of the characters. Both shows seem to approach life in a very neurotic, apathetic way at times that speaks about a life that is spent bemoaning the moment rather than living in it. There are plenty of positive moments within each show that manage to allow the characters to develop and mature. The only problem is that most of the characters never seem to do that as they continue roll along with the script and remain their same, cynical selves. Curb however gets a little bit more of a nod since the show was able to deal with more humanistic problems and situations that Seinfeld couldn’t thanks to its restrictions. READ MORE...

The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of November 27, 2017

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   Floribama Shore (Series Premiere) Monday at 10 pm on MTV Why: I feel a need to remind everyone that mentioning a show in this column is not necessarily an endorsement! Though it's almost certainly not good, Floribama Shore *is* important for MTV and people probably *will* talk about it. This new reality series mimics the formula of Jersey Shore , except replace "Jersey" with "Floribama" (this means the Panhandle of Florida, bordering Alabama, which mind you is not a term I've ever heard as a born and raised Floridian, but that's cool). A group of twentysomething personalities (or, aspiring personalities) come together for the summer (this was obviously filmed earlier) to this "Floribama Shore" to live together, party, and create drama that may or may not entertain us. Why's this important? It seems like a bit of a test run, to see if people are still interested in this formula, before MTV brings back Jersey Shore in 2018. It's hard to believe that at its peak, Jersey was bringing in 9 million viewers an episode, which are insane numbers for MTV! And although Jersey ended up being a surprise hit, my money says that neither series will fare very well this time around. We're all older, smarter, and have less tolerance for this garbage (I think) in 2017. Prepare to talk about: Is watching someone pee on a bed funny?; is there a Snooki in this mix? (no); can you even sit through an episode of this?   The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Series Premiere) Wednesday at 3 am on Amazon Why: Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino (and her husband, series executive producer Daniel Palladino) has jumped ship to Amazon (although fear not, their contract would allow them to still make more Gilmore Girls with Netflix ). It was actually right around this time last year that we were blessed with "A Year in the Life", and since that is not an option this time around, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the obvious alternative to fill that void in your life. The show is somewhat different from Gilmore Girls , taking place in 1950's Manhattan, but still focuses on a strong female lead. Miriam "Midge" Maisel is a Jewish Upper West Side housewife who gets dumped by her husband and realizes she wants to do standup comedy. Although the show takes place in a very different time from Gilmore, it still has the dialogue-style and pop-culture references that AS-P has become famous for. There's no doubt who created this show, and I'm delighted to report that it's...delightful (and perhaps you already know this, as the pilot was available as part of Amazon's Pilot Season earlier this year). What's more, the show has already been picked up for a second season, so you need not worry that Amazon will pull another Good Girls Revolt . Prepare to talk about: Rachel Brosnahan, your new obsession; which AS-P favorites will show up throughout the season; Jewish humor.   Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season Finale) Sunday at 10 pm on HBO Why: The last time a Curb Your Enthusiasm finale aired, it was more than six years before we got to see another new episode of Curb. Whether we end up waiting 6 more years, or whether this turns out to be the end for real, it's safe to say that we won't be seeing any new Curb for quite some time after this Sunday. Therefore, this Sunday's season (for now) finale is most definitely important. This has not been my favorite season of Curb by any means. I've found the episodes to be less tightly constructed than some of the best ones; there have been some funny moments (foisting the assistant, suggesting a child with Asperger's is just a jerk, the accidental text on purpose), but most of the episodes haven't come together for me in a grand, satisfying conclusion in the way that they used to. I also haven't yet found the recurring fatwa plotline to be particularly funny, but this finale will actually be delivering on Fatwa! The Musical (including another guest appearance by Lin-Manuel Miranda, natch), which has to be hilarious, and will hopefully bring the whole season together in a way that some of the individual episodes failed to do. And, although it hasn't been the strongest season, it has still certainly been great having Larry David back in our lives these last few months. Prepare to talk about: Which episode of the season was the best; does Lin-Manuel Miranda sleep?; will this be the end?   Rachel is the product manager of SideReel, and she would like everyone to know that in Florida, we don't even call it the shore; it's the beach, damnit! div.post p { text-align: justify; }
