MTV Has Posted Full Daria Episodes On Its YouTube Channel

If you grew up in the 90s and watched a lot of MTV , you should probably cancel your plans for the holiday weekend. The Music Television network has shared eight full episodes of its animated classic Daria , which ran from from 1997 to 2002. Originally launched as a spin-off of the Mike Judge cult classic Beevis and Butt-Head , Daria followed the life of disaffected, sarcastic, sneaky-brilliant high-school student Daria Morgendorffer, who used biting wit to navigate her relationships with friends, family, and classmates. The show struck a chord with many teenagers, who identified with Darias status as a social outcast. ...Read More... //

MTV's Top 10 'Classic' Shows

Believe it or not, MTV is celebrating its 35th birthday this month, and the network remains as relevant as ever. Now, it's easy (and very tempting) to get snarky and joke about that idea: MTV's relevance. After all, this is a "music television" channel that has long abandoned the music in favor of niche programming geared toward a very specific audience. But there is no arguing that MTV shows have had a significant impact on society, from introducing countless young people to LGBT issues to doggedly promoting the importance of voting. As MTV marks its latest milestone with a new throwback channel focused on its '90s and '00s series, we're taking a look back at some of the network's best "classic" shows. Which Animated Shows Should I Try? Your Pressing TV Questions, Answered

Welcome back to Stay Tuned, Vulture's TV advice column. Each Wednesday, Margaret Lyons answers your questions about your various TV triumphs and woes. Need help? Have a theory? Want a recommendation? Submit a question! You can email or tweet @margeincharge with the hashtag #staytuned . Am I missing out by not watching animated shows? I know they can't be lumped together just because they're animated, but I've never been into animation on the whole and worry I'm unfairly discounting some good stuff. I've never tried Archer, Rick & Morty , and other shows people rave about. Recently I watched BoJack Horseman , though, and loved it the character development is so well done, and the women on the show had their own interesting story arcs. I've never been into the "everything stays the same" mode a lot of animated shows use. Is BoJack just super great? What else am I missing? Monika BoJack is super great, so it's not totally fair to measure other shows by its standards, but in general: Yeah, you're missing out by not watching animated shows. Archer doesn't have the depth and pathos of BoJack , but it is hilarious and it has season-long arcs where things do substantively change episode to episode. Rick & Morty is more episodic, but it does have real emotional range. If you like mythology series, give Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra a go. (Start with Avatar .) Read More...

'Beavis and Butt-head': Mike Judge on why the time is right, plus the return of 'Daria'?

As we noted in our post about the first look at "Beavis and Butt-head's" return to MTV, the two title characters haven't changed much since their early-'90s debut. But that's how creator Mike Judge wants it."I didn't want to do a big, conscious forcing all this modern stuff on them," Judge said Friday (July 29) at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. The revived show, which returns in the fall, will make note of how much the Internet and other technology has exploded in the past 15 years, but you probably won't see Beavis tweeting from the couch. "Only when it's funny," Judge says as to how immersed in the present-day culture Beavis and Butt-head will be. "There's an episode where they work tech support that came out pretty good, I think. ... There's an episode where they see 'Twilight,' and all these girls are into vampires and think vampires are sexy, so they... //

La, La, La, La, La: Daria's Coming to DVD!

And it's about damn time. We've been living in a sick, sad world without a certain bespectacled high-school misanthrope, one Daria Morgendorffer. Daria, the 1997 sardonic spin-off of Beavis & Butthead, has been living in post-MTV purgatory since it ended in 2002. Although it endured a longer and more celebrated tenure than some other MTV cartoon greats (R.I.P. Clone High), the only tales of Lawndale to surface on DVD over the years have been the two Daria TV movies: Is It Fall Yet? and Is It College Yet? But rest easy, fellow '90s junkies: there have been rumblings in the DVD world that some sort of Daria release is due in 2010. Word came from Jezebel via TVShowsOnDVD that on the DVD for another old MTV show, The State, a preview ran for one such Daria DVD. We haven't heard anything more definitive just yet, but the simple thought of it is enough to make you break out the combat boots, do your best Quinn impression and debate the unresolved Mystik Spiral name-change in anticipation.
