'Dexter' series finale: 'It was a bittersweet going-away party,' says star Michael C. Hall

The "Dexter" cast and executive producers sat down for a Paley Center panel Thursday night (Sept. 12) to talk about the show's history and tease just a little bit of what's coming in the series finale on Sept. 22.Star Michael C. Hall says filming the series finale was very satisfying. "I was excited and I was gratified that at the end of eight years, I felt that we were still making something, you know?" says Hall. "96 episodes in, I felt like we were all called upon to really invest ourselves and bring it home. It was exciting to read the script and, I don't know, there were so many lasts. Different people on different days had their final scene. It was a bittersweet going-away party, perpetual going-away party."When we shot the final-final scene, it was -- you know the feeling when you read a really great book and the last page and something's hovering... //

The cast and executive producers of "Dexter" are participating in a panel Thursday night (Sept. 12) at the Paley Center in Los Angeles, where they'll talk about the Showtime drama's farewell season. In the third-to-last episode of "Dexter" ever, the titular character makes a choice -- but can he (and everyone else) live happily ever after?Dexter's FamilyThere are several rather heartbreaking parallel storylines going on with family this episode. Dr. Vogel gets a second chance with her son, Dexter is worried about the well-being of his pseudo-mom and Deb is faced with the prospect of losing the little family she has left. It's so sad to watch how desperate Dr. Vogel is to help Daniel, begging Dexter not to hurt him and thinking she can somehow save him. It's also pretty sad/scary how jealous Daniel is of Dexter and the life he got to lead.In the end, Evelyn chooses her other "son," agreeing to let Dexter kill Daniel after seeing him kill Zach (another pseudo-son), taking the bone saw to Zach's head while he was still alive in a horrendous video that Daniel kept on his computer.... //
