Did Downton Abbey Lose Its Charm? Finale Rounds Out a Frustrating Season

[WARNING: The following contains spoilers from the Season 4 finale of Downton Abbey . Read at your own risk.] We are grateful to have Downton Abbey in our lives, but our devotion to the show is the very reason we're so irked at how it progressed this season. Although we've come to terms with the loss of Matthew ( Dan Stevens ) and Sybil ( Jessica Brown-Findlay ), it doesn't seem like the writers quite know what to do in the wake of those deaths. So much of this season felt either forced or false or just failed miserably. Has Downton Abbey lost its charm?  Read More...   //www.tvguide.com/News/Downton-Abbey-Finale-Lose-Charm-1078083.aspx?rss=breakingnews

Downton Abbey and the Insensitive Portrayal of Rape on TV

I tried to give  Downton Abbey   the benefit of the doubt. I tried to stave off my judgments until I had given the show time to prove me wrong, to prove that this wasn't just another case of rape as cheap and consumable entertainment. But here we are at the end of the season, and my frustration has only grown. Downton 's fourth season notoriously featured the show's most beloved character, Anna ( Joanne Froggatt ), being violently assaulted by a visiting valet. But contrary to creator  Julian Fellowes '  defense  that he wanted to "[explore] the mental damage and the emotional damage" that follows sexual assault, I still have very little idea how Anna has been intimately affected by this tragic incident. Instead of parsing Anna's psychological state, the show continued its violation of her character by immediately shifting the dramatic tension to questions about how Bates ( Brendan Coyle ) would respond.  Read More...   //www.tvguide.com/News/Downton-Abbey-Rape-Plot-Device-TV-1078013.aspx?rss=breakingnews

'Downton Abbey' Season 4 Christmas special photo: What does it tell us?

ITV, the United Kingdom network that produces "Downton Abbey," -- and which just renewed everyone's favorite period drama for Season 5 -- has released a photo of the upcoming Christmas special, set to air Dec. 25 in the United Kingdom. We'd like to examine it, so don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled on Season 4. You've been warned. First off, Bates and Anna are conspicuously absent. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean anything because there are other staff members missing from the photo too, most notably Mrs. Hughes. But does it possibly mean something has happened with Mr. Green's death? Hmm.Secondly, Lady Edith is not pregnant. We've got our fingers crossed that somehow she managed to keep the baby, but more likely it's that she and Rosamund are back from Switzerland and her baby is being raised by someone else. Poor Lady Edith. Neither of Lady Mary's suitors, Lord Gillingham or Charles... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/11/downton-abbey-season-4-christmas-special-photo-what-does-it-tell-us.html

'Downton Abbey' Season 4 finale spoilers: Romance blossoms, romance fades

It was all about the couples on the Season 4 finale of "Downton Abbey." Don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled. UpstairsBoth of Lady Mary's suitors are back (her "desire of suitors," as Lady Cora says), with Gillingham have called off his engagement to Mabel. These two men have created such an interesting dynamic at the estate when they are there at the same time. As Lord Grantham wonders, "What kind of menage do they have going on?"And Mary's not leading them on, per se, she's very up front about how she's not ready for a romance -- but it's kind of cute to see how flattered Mary is by the attention. And both of the men are utterly respectful of each other, which is also nice to see. This is a storyline we actually would like to see continue in Season 5 because both men are attractive and interesting in their own... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/11/downton-abbey-season-4-finale-spoilers-romance-blossoms-romance-fades.html
