'Emily Owens M.D.': Michael Rady on Micah's mother, blood and guts, and being in the friend zone

"Emily Owens, M.D." is considerably more lighthearted than most medical dramas we've seen on television. Mamie Gummer's titular character is as bubbly as she is awkward and as hopeful as she is quirky, which makes for a hefty dose of comedy. Still, the show does take place in a hospital, and things can't be happy-go-lucky all the time. In this week's episode, Micah (Michael Rady), who is quickly becoming one of Emily's closest friends, entrusts her with the care of his mother, who is suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer. It's a sobering reminder that despite all the laughing (and cringing), there are high stakes involved in this show.We visited with Rady on set to talk to him about what's to come for Micah and his mom -- as well as the burgeoning love triangle between Micah, Emily, and Will (Justin Hartley) and the squeamishness that makes some of his surgical scenes more difficult than you'd... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/11/emily-owens-md-michael-rady-on-micahs-mother-blood-and-guts-and-being-in-the-friend-zone.html

'Emily Owens, M.D.'s' Mamie Gummer: 'Every time I try to be funny, it doesn't work'

Zap2it: How do you view balancing the serious and the humorous as the title character in "Emily Owens, M.D."?Mamie Gummer: I think that maybe at least I sound like I know what I'm talking about, which is basically all I do when I'm spitting out that medical jargon, but I also hope to be funny. Comedy is so hard. Every time I try to be funny, it doesn't work, but Emily has the best of intentions and just works so hard, she keeps slipping on banana peels.Zap2it: Did your previous work on such shows as "Off the Map" and "The Good Wife" make you want to try series work again?Mamie Gummer: Yes, definitely ... and a hospital is a really good theater, in the sense that you're coming in and catching people at critical moments in their lives. I also trust Jennie [Snyder Urman, the creator and executive producer of "Emily Owens, M.D."] to take... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/11/emily-owens-mds-mamie-gummer-every-time-i-try-to-be-funny-it-doesnt-work.html

Emily Owens M.D. 1.04 Photos: Emily Tries to Become a Research Assistant

Emily Owens M.D. hasn'thad the easiest time at her new job. Her relationship with her attending physician has worsened, her friendship with Will is in a very weird gray area after her confession, and Cassandra has continued trying to get under her skin for the sheer joy that it brings. Making it through nearly a quarter century of education may have made her academically ready for the rigors of being a surgeon, but Emily has yet to fully grasp the idea that her social interactions with the people at Denver Memorial will color much of her professional achievements (or lack thereof) in the early going. On the next episode of Emily Owens M.D. , Emily will get a chance to prove herself in surgery, as Dr. Bandari and Dr. Hamada need her to assist in the repair of a heart valve on a fetus. Emily may not have gotten off on the right foot with Dr. Bandari so far, but now's the time for her to shine, to show that there's a reason she made it into the program in the first place. The surgery, combined with Will and Cassandra's flirting, drive Emily to put her hat in the ring for the position of Dr. Bandari's research assistant, something that would help her career tremendously. There'd be a chance to get credited on papers and to have her name in the same breath as a world-renowned surgeon, let alone the fact that spending more time alone with Bandari could help Emily win her over for good. Beating out Cassandra for the position and keeping her away from Will would, of course, be icing on the cake. Elsewhere on Emily Owens M.D. , Emily and Micah have a patient desperately in need of a kidney transplant, but when her new husband offers one of his, she refuses to accept it. Emily Owens M.D. airs Tuesdays at 9:00 on The CW. Be sure to click the arrows above to get a look at photos from the next episode. Is Emily ready to become Dr. Bandari's research assistant? If she gets the position, will that keep Cassandra away from Will for good? Will Emily be able to impress Bandari and Hamada in surgery? //feedproxy.google.com/~r/tvovermind/tvnews/~3/KxNoZ3v4bfk/
