Recession-Ready Mercy Joins Other Nursing Shows

Why so many nursing shows lately? It may be the economy's fault. Showtime 's Nurse Jackie and TNT 's HawthoRNe will soon be joined by NBC's new drama Mercy . It's just another sign that the recession has turned networks' attention from upscale doctors and lawyers to the pink-collar workers who didn't always get their due on the air. "It really felt like a way to depict real working women," Mercy creator and executive director Liz Heldens said. "These girls are drinking beer in New Jersey, not martinis in Manhattan. I mean, look, they manage to pull it together and look fantastic but they don't have a ton of money." The shows' nurses are as varied as those in the profession: HawthoRNe follows a fiercely dedicated nurse in her 30s (Jada Pinkett-Smith), Nurse Jackie stars Edie Falco as a nurse in her 40s who almost revels in rule-breaking and Mercy follows three twentysomething nurses, one of whom (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Michelle Trachtenberg) is just learning to do the job. "I think that audiences want to be interested in real life people. They don't want to sugar coat things," Trachtenberg told The actress says she gained a new appreciation for nursing a few weeks ago when she was stung by a bee in New York City and needed medical assistance. She said a male nurse with a unicorn tattoo was the first to come to her aid. "He was so lovely and so nice and the doctor was really cool too, but there was this amazing connection for me because here I am, I was like, 'I'm gonna be a nurse!' He got so excited that there was someone that was following their dream. I'm like, 'Well, for fakesies.'" She tried without success to keep in touch - and hopes that her nurse gets the recognition he deserves. "I asked for his number, and he was like, 'Honey, I'm taken," she joked. "My boyfriend was real happy I didn't stay in touch. But I hope he reads something and he's like, I'm the dude with the unicorn!" Mercy debuts Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 8/7c. Source Here

'Parenthood' Replaced by 'Mercy' in Fall - Featured

NBC is rooting for its star to heal first before coming back to work. " Parenthood ", one of the new series that the Peacock offers this Fall, has been shelved for midseason premiere in order to give Maura Tierney time to recuperate from an undisclosed illness. "Start of production on NBC Universal's new series 'Parenthood' has been postponed for eight weeks due to medical evaluation that valued cast member Maura Tierney is undergoing," NBC said in a statement released to THR. "The top priority for NBC, Universal Media Studios and Imagine Television is the well-being of Ms. Tierney. We are unable to release further details and ask that you respect her privacy at this time." In "Parenthood", Tierney plays Sarah who is one of the four Braverman siblings. She is a financially-challenged single mother who returns home to her parents and siblings in Berkeley, Calif. NBC will air Michelle Trachtenberg-starring medical drama " Mercy " as replacement. After NBC's 2009-2010 primetime schedule announcement, it's time to take a closer look at all the new shows that will soon grace our screens. What is it with nurse shows lately? Mercy pretty much looks like a poor man's version of Nurse Jackie meets HawthoRNe , where you get the strong nurse who is smarter than the doctors and also the ingenue character. I'm still curious about seeing the first episode, but so far my expectations are pretty low. Mercy Synopsis: "Mercy," a new medical drama with a unique point of view, portrays the lives of the staff at Mercy Hospital as seen through the eyes of those who know it best -- its nurses. Nurse Veronica Callahan (Taylor Schilling, "Dark Matter") returns to Mercy from a military tour in Iraq -- and she knows more about medicine than all of the residents combined. Together with fellow nurses Sonia Jimenez (Jaime Lee Kirchner, " Rescue Me ") and Chloe Payne (Michelle Trachtenberg, " Gossip Girl "), Callahan navigates through the daily traumas and social landmines of life and love both inside the hospital and out in the real world. The cast also includes: James Tupper (" Men in Trees ") as Dr. Chris Sands, a new doctor at the hospital who complicates Veronica's life; Diego Klattenhoff (" Supernatural ") as Mike Callahan, Veronica's husband; and Guillermo Diaz (" Weeds ") as Nurse Angel Lopez. "Mercy" is a production from Universal Media Studios and Berman Braun. Joining writer/executive producers Liz Heldens (NBC's " Friday Night Lights ") and Gretchen Berg & Aaron Harberts ("Pushing Daisies," "Pepper Dennis") are executive producers Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun. Emmy Award winner Adam Bernstein (NBC's " 30 Rock ," "Rescue Me") is the director. Source & Promo
