Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan - Season 1 - Episode 13 - Review: "Lord Gyuki's Rebellion: the Whole"

The first twelve episodes of Nura have come and gone and apparently we're in need of a reminder about them. If you are a huge fan of the series, you likely know all the key points in it and will love watching the story of what Gyuki has done, the reasons behind it and how it all plays out in the past and present. If you're ambivalent about the show, much as I am, a recap like this can either make elements from the past clearer and more defined when shown in short form or it can be completely annoying because you feel like you've already worked through all of this. Particularly if you've felt that at the end of the Gyuki storyline and just after that, the show was starting to stretch its legs properly. For me, this recap episode really pushes the limits. Particularly problematic is that in the first couple of minutes, a lot of it is done without dialogue or even context that someone dropping into the show would understand. Granted, it's a recap of what Gyuki has done, but that doesn't help what's ostensibly the purpose of a recap episode; to give the animators some breathing room without having to resort to using the B or C team to animate a story as well as provide a way for people to jump onto the show if they missed it up until this point for any number of reasons. The focus on Gyuki for it does deal with the primary storyline of the opening arc, but with the first half pretty much eschewing even a real mention or showing of young Rikuo pre-Third Heir status, it's an odd way to go.
