Parenthood Review: The Times are Changing

Nothing too drastic happened on  Parenthood Season 5 Episode 22  - and that was the perfect decision for this finale.  As of this writing, there is no determination whether the series will be picked up for another season, but it seems unlikely there won't at least be a shortened run to close out loose ends. Even so, if this episode did have to be an end, it would be just fine because everything was just beginning. Parenthood Cry-cap: Let the Rookie Win

There was a scene in last night’s season-five finale of Parenthood that, for me, demonstrated what this show is capable of when it’s striking all the right poignant, textured notes. It happened when Joel and Julia tucked Sydney into bed while Joel regaled his daughter with tales of what happened on the day she was born. After laughing over how many Bravermans were packed into the delivery room, he told the story of the epidural that suddenly made Julia besotted with her anesthesiologist. “Here I was, going through 40 hours of intense labor next to this woman,” Joel remembered, smiling and looking directly at the woman who is still, despite their separation, his lawfully wedded wife. “This guy comes in and gives her one shot: She loves him.”   Read More... //www.vulture.com/2014/04/parenthood-recap-season-5-finale-tavi.html

Parenthood Cry-cap: Tears, Jerked

Since I’ve complained on more than one occasion that not enough tears have been jerked from our eyeholes during season five of Parenthood , the extreme weepiness of this, the penultimate episode, was sort of refreshing. I needed salty discharge to cathartically swim down my cheeks while I watched Kristina Braverman choke her way through a good-bye to her cancer-stricken friend Gwen. I really, really did.   At the same time, the more rational side of my brain — the part that hates Love Actually  and finds YouTube proposal videos cloying, and once opted to spend a long bus ride staring out the window because that seemed more compelling than reading the God-awful Nicholas Sparks novel that was in my lap — thought the heavy emotion was ladled on a little thick. First there was one Gwen scene (the home-hospice good-bye one, which killed me), then there was another one when Kristina found out Gwen had definitely died (also muchos tears), and then there was another one, with that damn sapling that’s obviously destined to grow into the tree of life. (Are you trying to suck all the liquid out of my body via my tear ducts, Parenthood?) Yeah, rational me was too waterlogged to put up a legitimate fight at that point.   Read More... //www.vulture.com/2014/04/parenthood-recap-season-5-goodbye-gwen.html

'Parenthood' Recap: Amber Collapses When Ryan Returns

Joel helps repair broken floors and his broken relationship, Hank is there for Amber when she gets news about an injured Ryan, and Kristina is left to grieve over a sweet and important friendship in her life. This was an emotional and telling episode leading in to next week's Parenthood finale.    Read More... //www.buddytv.com/articles/parenthood/parenthood-recap-amber-collaps-53235.aspx

Parenthood Season 5 “The Pontiac” Review

I know what you’re trying to do,  Parenthood  writers. You’re trying to make me warm up to the idea of Sarah and Hank. Admittedly, when I saw that Hank was still at the hospital and complaining about the taste of the coffee, I thought it was really sweet and kinda adorable. Adorable in a Max and Hank bonding sort of way, which is quite rare during a typical Sarah/Hank scene. My only complaint about the hospital scenes was Zeek’s absence, given his closeness to Ryan and the support he provided to Amber when Ryan decided to reenlist. While Hank was stepping up to the plate, Amber found herself in the middle of a very awkward family reunion between Ryan and his mother. I seem to recall Ryan not wanting to involve his mother in his and Amber’s wedding plans, so I knew her arrival at the hospital would not be a happy occasion. In addition to the tension between the two, Amber learned that Ryan’s mother knew nothing about her. Awkward. Read More... //www.tvequals.com/2014/04/18/parenthood-season-5/

Parenthood Review: Breaking Free

Considering the ominous and notorious commercial promos,  Parenthood Season 5 Episode 21  didn't really offer as much as I expected with regard to Amber and Ryan or Hank and Sarah. Instead, their stories were built up and saved for a later day. Kristina and Julia were the true headliners this week. Especially Kristina while Monica Potter got some action for her Emmy reel as Kristina dealt with the loss of her friend, Gwen.
