Pupa Episode #12 Anime Review (Season Finale)

With eleven disturbing episodes behind us, and the previous one feeling like it offered a sense of closure, the final episode of the series has arrived and it’s strangely happy in its nature. Though with a title like Larva for it, you know it just means to pay attention to what comes later. What we get here for it is basically a cute form version of Yume and Utsutsu as the two of them are in the department store where Yume wants one of the really nice teddy bears that they have, but Utsutsu has only a little bit of money and not enough. Since her teddy bear is in bad shape, they get to try a few different things in order to try and get one, including the lottery form which works in a couple of different ways. READ MORE...

Pupa Episode #11 Anime Review

With one of the main themes of the series being the way the siblings protect each other, it’s been interesting to see how each of them have really taken on that role, though there are different issues for them. With Yume having gone a bit nuts in the previous episode, and seeing the chaos unleashed in the surgery room and the location in general, it’s a bloody fine mess that exists when the pair are actually reunited. It’s almost comical in how Yume talks about what she’s done in such a calm way, and how he just looks on and does what he can to support her. It’s family at its finest, in a twisted kind of way. Pupa Episode #10 Anime Review

Things seem like they just keep going from utterly catastrophic to whatever the next level actually is when it comes to this story. With bodies everyone, parts and lots of blood all over, Yume hsa caused a lot of trouble in her search for Utsutsu. The carnage is staggering and it looks more raw than usual here because of the style of the show. Yume’s hunger is significant at this point but it may pale next to her anger over those that took her brother, which we see how she lashes out, even obscured as it is in this broadcast version. It’s just disturbing, similar to what we saw Utsutsu put through previously. His life isn’t going well here either and we see a bit more of his slow progress in trying to recover, and the delirium that stems from it. READ MORE...

Pupa Episode #09 Anime Review

It’s hard to feel for anyone in this show considering the things we’ve learned so far, so when you have Yume bound to a chair and blindfolded, you can’t be quite sure what to feel as she tries to understand what’s going on. It’s even creepier when she hears screaming from a little ways off as you realize Utsutsu is being operated on but can’t be given anything to ease the pain because the virus negates it. Utsutsu is turning into a quick regeneration machine and that just fascinates the people involved in all of this. The psychological strain on Yume is starting to take hold, but we learn through all of this that there is at least a different side to what’s going on as those that have "quarantined" the siblings are intent on making their gift/curse useful to society at large. But they have such a poor way of going about it, which leads to a huge amount of impending violence. READ MORE...

Pupa Episode #08 Anime Review

Getting a little more background on Maria certainly helped in its own way in the previous episode, though the show is just filled with a lot of bizarre things. With this episode, the siblings are back at school where the weirdness of censoring comes into play as a knife is censored in one scene but not another as the two get accosted at school. With Utsutsu being taken advantage of here and stabbed heavily when the two are taken to a warehouse, you really keep waiting to see Yume transform and eat him alive. But this guy, who has been waiting to connect with these two for his own nefarious purpose, gets away with what he’s doing for quite awhile, cutting Utsutsu open with ease and seeing just how quickly he heals. It’s twisted and disturbing but made weird because of the inconsistent censoring that’s going on in Japan. READ MORE...

Pupa Episode #07 Anime Review

Pupa went for the really twisted and weird in a number of ways angle in the previous episode, which of course means the show can seemingly go anywhere after that. With this episode, we get a bit more about Maria as we see her as a child, her general lack of empathy and the way she just can’t seem to really read people and what they’re going through. When she says she’s intent on creating a monster child, it’s not just a dark moment, but one that has a different kind of malic about it that creeps you out. Pairing this with Utsutsu talking about Yume and her issues just adds to the way the people involved here are so well matched for each other. READ MORE...

Pupa Episode #06 Anime Review

Giving us some serious back story material for Yume and her family life previously really changes your view of the show. Yume’s desire for her brother, at least in a carnivorous way, is disturbing to watch here as we get a sequence where he’s all laid out on the bed, shirtless, and she’s just dreamily crawling over him and eating his skin and muscles right from him. And loving every minute of it as if he’s a fine steak, all while his blood pools and his tears flow right alongside it. Pairing it with some upbeat and happy music is obviously comical, but with the way she’s so happy about it all you can certainly see it from her twisted perspective as ever morsel of her brother gives her what she craves and needs in a huge way. Pupa Episode #05 Anime Review

With Maria pulling some strings as we saw in the last episode with how Utsutsu is being kept hidden and Yume believing she killed him, she’s starting to spiral emotionally under the weight of what she did. But what we get instead of following up on that is seeing the birth of Yume, whose mother knew she was giving birth to a real monster. And you get that completely when Yume was bon and looks at her mother. It didn’t take long for her to get teeth either compared to other kids and as a baby she just has a dangerous look about her, at least through her mother’s point of view. She’s fully in protecting Utsutsu mode, but as we see, Yume can’t be killed and that just leads to more disturbing ideas of what Yume really is, and what she was brought into by her husband. Pupa Episode #04 Anime Review

With Utsutsu coping with the big bite his sister took out of him in the previous episode, we definitely got an idea of how they can continue moving on. Having Yume returned to normal after all of this, with so much blood around her, Maria is following through on her promise to provide the cleanup for everything. For Yume, the shock is huge, but more so when she discovers her brothers body being carted off as Maria makes it clear the difference between dying and killing. But we know that there’s something more to this as Maria has a plan in motion and it just feels positively disturbing. Even more so when we see her where she’s hidden the real Utsutsu and begins to show him what he’s capable of while also revealing a touch of what’s going on. READ MORE...

Pupa Episode #03 Anime Review

Having one of your leads turned into a demonic monster is one thing, having them eat the other lead is kind of problematic. That’s dealt with in some form here as Utsutsu ends up coming back to life here (is that hairpin responsible?), but not before some other quirky things happen that involve a kind of surreal approach to how Yume is handling the whole situation. Though her body has changed, it seems like she resides within it in some form, which involves her talking with a twisted little stuffed animal head that has quite an attitude. Yume’s had a simple feeling since her introduction, but with what we get here she becomes a bit more complex in a way as she struggles with the hunger within. There’s a curious inner sequence of sorts that has a reunion with Utsutsu and that potentially helps his rebirth in a way, but it’s one that’s just so twisted with how she devours parts of him, apologizing all the way, but unable to stop.
