'Sherlock' Season 3 premiere scores strong ratings behind 'Downton Abbey'

The pairing of "Downton Abbey" and "Sherlock" proved to be a good one for PBS Sunday night (Jan. 19). The Season 3 premiere of "Sherlock" scored 4 million viewers, PBS says. That's a 25-percent jump from the 3.2 million viewers for its second-season debut in 2012. The ratings bump follows a record-setting premiere for the series in the U.K. on New Year's Day. "Downton Abbey" also saw its ratings rise Sunday night. 'Sherlock' Season 4 being planned, Steven Moffat says

"Sherlock" Season 3 hasn't even premiered in the United States, but the show's creators are already moving ahead with plans for Season 4. According to showrunner Steven Moffat, the upcoming season is in the works.Moffat made the promise to fans at a screening of the final Season 3 episode, "His Last Vow," on Wednesday (Jan. 8). "We have got plans. They tend to be what exciting twists and turns we can have. The "Sherlock" Season 3 finale, "His Final Vow," introduces fans to a new enemy, Charles Augustus Magnussen (Lars Mikkelsen). 'Sherlock': Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch and Wanda Ventham's surprise cameo - video

The "Sherlock" Season 3 premiere had one particularly surprising meeting: Sherlock Holmes' parents. Knowledgeable fans, however, got an even bigger surprise: Mr. and Mrs. Holmes were played by Benedict Cumberbatch's parents, Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch and Wanda Ventham.Both actors, the elder Cumberbatch and Ventham appear on screen for less than two minutes before their son dismisses them. The audience only finds out their identities when Sherlock mentions it in passing to Watson (Martin Freeman).
