THE CLEVELAND SHOW “BFF’s” Review

THE CLEVELAND SHOW  "BFF’s" Season 3 Episode 1 – If you had any doubt that the best friends in question in "BFF’s," the season premiere of the  The Cleveland Show , would be Cleveland and Peter Griffin…then you don’t know Seth MacFarlane very well. Whatever else you can say about him, the man is the master of cross-promotion. When he finds out that Peter has visited Stoolbend without so much as poking him on Facebook to tell him, Cleveland is despondent, wondering what he did to lose the friendship of a man who blatantly hates his own daughter. He becomes "that" friend…you know, the one who constantly calls and texts and writes on your wall. (In a brilliant nod to one of my favorite  Family Guy  eps, Peter’s ringback tone is "Bird is the Word." Love it.) When he finally resorts to making the trip to Rhode Island, Peter basically blows him off, telling him that he moved away and they’re not friends anymore. This after two seasons of random crossovers. Typical Peter. So, Cleveland turns his attention to his new circle of friends in Virginia and convinces them all to go on canoe trip in the woods. Is that a banjo I hear? Again, if you were surprised that they ended up being kidnapped by redneck rapists, you’re beautifully naive about these shows. THE CLEVELAND SHOW “Hot Cocoa Bang Bang” Review

THE CLEVELAND SHOW  "Hot Cocoa Bang Bang" Season 2, Episode 22 – Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I was able to pick up  on most of the Comic-Con related jokes in this season finale of  The Cleveland Show , but this episode had me laughing from start to finish. Cleveland ’s terrible comic book, "Waderman" leads the family to San Diego so that Cleveland can follow one of his delayed dreams  to sell a comic book at Comic-Con. I laughed out loud at ClevelandJr.’s uncontrollable shaking excitement over the prospect of this vacation because I’ve seen 10 year old kids react in the exact same way to the mention of Comic-Con. Cleveland Jr. seems to have a pretty good idea of what the family should expect and I loved his description when he tried to explain it to Donna, "imagine a hundred thousand unwashed comic book fans in costume, shoe horned into a musty convention center that smells like ass and corn chips, all waiting in line to see three minutes of something the rest of the world will have to wait two weeks to see. Now don’t you feel silly?" THE CLEVELAND SHOW “Your Show of Shows” Review

THE CLEVELAND SHOW  "Your Show of Shows" Season 2, Episode 22 – The opening from tonight’s episode of  The Cleveland Show  will probably give me nightmares about raccoons for a little while. I can’t seem to get the image of a raccoon holding the skinned off face of Harv Williams out of my head and it was definitely darker humor than I’ve seen on  The Cleveland Show  in a while. The demise of "Picking on Raccoons" host, Harv Williams, meant that Cleveland  got to try his hand at being a public access star. When Cleveland is trying to be funny, he tells terrible jokes and does horrible impressions, I’m not even sure how his friends  find him funny, but he gets a chance to be a daytime talk show host. After his first attempt was received with terrible reviews and he has a mental breakdown in the bathroom, he realizes the best way to succeed in daytime television  is to make a hit "chick talk show." Cleveland shows up on set wearing a pink suit and pink shoes and lists off topics women supposedly love talking about: "kids, mothers, shopping, chocolate, white wine , loneliness, bulimia , drinks" and then has Roberta come on as his first guest to talk about periods and tampons followed by Kendra for the makeover segment. My first thought after watching this bit was that  TheCleveland Show  was being totally sexist in it’s portrayal of the kind of television women like. Then again, I don’t really watch daytime television so for all I know, Cleveland was right on the mark about what daytime talk shows are like so if that’s the case, that’s some disappointing TV. THE CLEVELAND SHOW “Back to Cool” Review

THE CLEVELAND SHOW  "Back to Cool" Season 2, Episode 20 – I don’t know if I would have ever considered Cleveland  to be cool in the first place, but in tonight’s episode of  The Cleveland Show , he competes against Donna’s ex-husband in a "Coolympics" to prove Cleveland Jr. that he’s still a cool dad. When Donna’s ex-husband, Robert, comes to collect his alimony check, Cleveland dumps the kids on him for the day so they can enjoy  some free time researching  Consumer Reports reviews and making popsicle stick houses. During their time together, Robert wins over Cleveland Jr. and Rallo with an exciting day out and although he’s still hanging out with some shady people, it starts to seem like Robert has become a relatively decent guy. Robert takes an interest in Cleveland Jr. and treats him with a kind of respect that he doesn’t normally get from his family. Compared to Robert, Cleveland seems to be getting more and more awkward. His coming of age sex talk with Cleveland Jr. on the beach was totally absurd and while I felt bad for Cleveland after he sawCleveland Jr. calling Robert his dad, I could totally see it coming. THE CLEVELAND SHOW “Ship’rect” Review

THE CLEVELAND SHOW  "Ship’rect" Season 2 Episode 19 – Tonight’s episode of  The Cleveland Show  has Cleveland and his friends entering Stoolbend’s annual boat race in an attempt to win free beer for a year. The guys put together a shoddy raft with foot paddles to enter the race and start practicing, but their team falls apart  after Cleveland meets his Stoolbend idol, Barry Shadwell. Cleveland turns into a blubbering fan boy and makes every attempt to get into Barry’s life. Barry invites Cleveland to join his team for the boat race which puts Cleveland in a tough position to choose between his friends and his idol. Luckily Cleveland can rely on the advice of Daryl Hall and John Oates who are the angel  and devil  of Cleveland’s conscience. Their bickering was hilarious and their input ultimately sways Cleveland to decide that nothing really matters and that he should do whatever he wants. THE CLEVELAND SHOW “The Essence of Cleveland” Review

THE CLEVELAND SHOW  "The Essence of Cleveland" Season 2, Episode 18 – Tonight’s episode of The Cleveland Show  follows Cleveland as he copes with his feelings of being unappreciated by Donna. After being hit by a vehicle in the middle  of a high speed  chase , Cleveland finds himself in the hospital where he realizes that Donna doesn’t know the most basic things about him – including how to spell his name . Donna is especially stuck up in this episode and she dismisses Cleveland’s unhappy reaction to discovering that she knows nothing about him by explaining that she is the prize that he’s finally won. Of course, Cleveland feels even more bitter about their relationship and leaves to blow off some steam with the guys by touring open houses. I loved this bit with Cleveland’s friends listing off all the things they know about him while ooh-ing and ah-ing over hardwood floors and bath design . The 'Cleveland Show' Season 2, Episode 18 Recap

You have to give Seth MacFarlane credit for one thing: At least he's aware of how many times he's taken the easy way out on 'The Cleveland Show' by just having Kendra show up and throwing out a fat joke. As she wasn't the butt of any of them this week, she scooted by like a crawler on the bottom of the screen to announce the 100th fat joke of the season. I haven't been keeping track, but as Kendra has been featured more this year, I wouldn't be surprised if it was at least that. The rest of the episode was actually pretty clever, with Cleveland reconnecting with a girl who had a crush on him in high school (voiced by Lizzy Caplan). There was no B-story to this episode, and yet the episode never seemed to meander too far from entertaining. THE CLEVELAND SHOW “The Way the Cookie Crumbles” Review

THE CLEVELAND SHOW  "The Way the Cookie Crumbles" Season 2, Episode 16 – Tonight’s episodeof  The Cleveland Show  started off with a totally random, but pretty funny trailer for a movie called "The Cleveland Show 3D" featuring Cleveland as an ad executive getting married and fighting zombies with exploding babies. The rest of the episode had nothing to do with those first couple minutes, but I guess I’ve come to expect that kind of randomness from  The Cleveland Show . After all of Cleveland’s friends show up sporting his childhood things, Cleveland confronts his parents at a garage sale where they’re selling everything to anyone who is willing to buy it. After LeVar admits to Cleveland that he was taken in by a scam, Cleveland takes his parents into his home and uses it as an opportunity to get revenge on his father for the years of torment he experienced growing up. I actually felt bad for LeVar during this montage watching him work while Cleveland and Horsey played around. I liked that eventually it was discovered that Cleveland’s mother, Evelyn was the one taken in by a modeling scam and that LeVar had been covering for her so she wouldn’t be embarrassed. 'The Cleveland Show' Recap

Things were lonely on Seth MacFarlane watch this week, with only 'Cleveland' turning in a new episode. I guess Cleveland was missing his friends from Quahog as well because the episode featured far more cutaways than its usual average. 'Cleveland' is usually a show that relies heavily on its plots and stories, and yet in this installment the cutaways offered perhaps the biggest laughs. Maybe the writers had an inkling that this story, while well told and emotionally well balanced, was lacking in the yucks department so they fell back on the old tried and true. THE CLEVELAND SHOW “Terry Unmarried” Review

THE CLEVELAND SHOW "Terry Unmarried" Season 2, Episode 14 - In tonight’s episode of The Cleveland Show , Cleveland becomes upset with Donna for faking her love of his special brew of coffee which leads to a chain reaction of suspicion in the Tubbs-Brown household and a series of events that threaten his marriage and his friendships. But before I get to all that, I have to address Rallo and Junior’s b-story line because I can’t really handle booger-eating humor. Poop, fart, vomit, snot rocket gags I can laugh at it all, but the minute anyone gets a chunk of goopy dried nasal mucous on their finger and moves to put it into their mouth, something in my brain’s subconscious fires and my gag reflex takes over. So, as cute as it was to see Rallo in the shower and brooding about his booger friend in various scenic settings, and as catchy as the booger song was, and as funny as it was to have Justin Timberlake appear as a singing booger, I think my brain blacked out for about half of the Rallo and Junior storyline. I reacted a lot like Junior when Rallo flicks his finger snot onto his glasses and the little girl on the playground with Rallo. It’s one of those things that’s just a little too gross for me.
