One year has passed, and Louisa is fed up of being poor and to satisfy their new contemptuous landlady Vasilia, who repossesses the family's chairs over non-payment of rent. She sets up a market stall, the failure of which at first is taken by delight by fellow Briton Hugh Jarvis, who proceeds to try and woo her after the family uses his olive-pressing services.
