'The Vampire Diaries' recap: The monster's heart is the worst part

This week's episode of "The Vampire Diaries" showcased some characters that have been backburnered lately -- specifically, Bonnie and Tyler. It's no secret that I don't love the way Bonnie is written on this show. Kat Graham is fantastic, but the writing for Bonnie is uneven and the emotional consequences of her stories tend to be swept aside in favor of using her as a plot device. This episode went a long way toward giving her some history and some depth, though, which was a relief. It was also nice to see her and Elena spend some time focusing on human emotion and what those emotions mean outside the realm of their supernatural civil war.We also saw some definite movement when it comes to the central love triangle of the show. Most importantly, there was finally some clear acknowledgement that it is a triangle, in a powerful and heartbreaking scene between Stefan and Elena. 'Vampire Diaries' Recap: 'The Ties That Bind'

All right, " Vampire Diaries ." When I’ve repeatedly told you that all I care about is history and character development and Originals, I meant it. So, I think we have a slight communication problem. It’s understandable, considering I write these recaps in my apartment and you are a TV show, so you obviously can’t read, lacking human qualities and such, plus even if you could read, I doubt you’d read what I write (although you totally should, obviously). That being said, I’ll take what I can get, so thank you for introducing us to Bonnie’s mom, Abby Bennett. She is clearly not an original vampire, but that is where Elijah comes in. Oh yes, he returned. We’ll get to that. It was a cheap trick, though, because I specifically asked for ORIGINAL VAMPIRES WHOM WE HAVE NOT YET MET. At some point, "TVD," you’re going to have to stop stringing me along. Let’s hope it’s soon after February 2, because, yeah, you’re going on a mild hiatus, again! WHAT THE HECK! Oh, we’ll get to that, too. We’ll get to that, too. Read More... //hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2012/01/20/vampire-diaries-recap-the-ties-that-bind/

The Vampire Diaries 3.12 "The Ties That Bind" Review

At the heart of The Vampire Diaries family is what is important and this episode showcases this central theme. The connections between family has been the driving force of Stefan's (Paul Wesley) vendetta against Klaus (Joseph Morgan) through using Klaus' family coffin collection as leverage; but after he succeeded in getting Klaus to remove his hybrids from Mystic Falls what will be his next move? As this is The Vampire Diaries we don't have to wait long for either vampire to take action, but it is Bonnie (Kat Graham) who could prove to be the most valuable player in this good old fashioned stalemate. Recap: 'The Vampire Diaries' - 'The Ties That Bind'

Tonight's episode of "The Vampire Diaries" chews through an awful lot of plot -- I think, in addition to B and C storylines, we might have some D and E ones as well. But the ones that resonate the most have to do with rejection and what these continually challenged characters are willing to do for love (both romantic and familial) -- which, as you might expect, is a heck of a lot.  We start with what I hope is Bonnie having another one of her nightmares. She dreams about the mystery casket in the middle of the woods, then Klaus appears and the next thing she knows, she's buried alive in a casket. I feel like Bonnie is having to go through an awful lot for something that really shouldn't be her problem at all, but I guess this is just part of one's witchly duty. 'The Vampire Diaries' recap: Family Ties

In an episode with so much to cheer about -- Stefan's reaction to the kiss Damon and Elena shared, Tyler hearing he'll have to put himself through hell to break the sire bond, Bonnie actually having something to do -- it's the return of Elijah that got me the most excited. As in: I screamed his name. Then chanted it. Then did some fist-pumping. "Are you Team Damon or Team Stefan?" "Team Stefan or Team Klaus?" At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter to me because I am, and always will be, Team Elijah. But let's back up. The hour began with Bonnie having one of her dreams. The witch spirits had clearly grown impatient with her because this was not subtle. In the Bennett witch graveyard, she got bit by Klaus after he told her he had figured out how to open the coffin. Cut to her inside the coffin lit by the light of her cell phone (which reminded me of Ryan Reynolds in  Buried ), screaming and violently shaking her head (which made me think if she was Cassie on  The Secret Circle , she would have been able to bust herself out of it). A woman opened the coffin. We all knew it was her mother -- but Bonnie didn't. How sad was it hearing Bonnie tell Elena that she hadn't recognized the woman's face at first? The Vampire Diaries Recap of Season 3, Episode 12, “The Ties That Bind”: Family Matters

Tonight we discover that sweet dreams are not made of the stuff that’s in Bonnie’s head. "The Ties That Bind" opens with the top witch of Mystic Falls having a reoccurring nightmare.
