'Toddlers and Tiaras' 5th anniversary: 5 things we have (unfortunately) learned

"Toddlers and Tiaras" celebrates its fifth anniversary on Monday (Jan. 27). Yes, it's only been five years since the world first met these first pint-sized beauty queens. There was an innocent era when few of us could identify a glitz dress. We didn't always know that people spray-tanned their young children. There was a time before Honey Boo Boo.Five years later, it has all changed. And here are five things that viewers of "Toddlers and Tiaras" now know about beauty pageants and more.1. There are more rhinestones in the world than we ever imagined. When the contestants and overbearing mothers on "Toddlers and Tiaras" talk about glitz, they basically mean rhinestones. Lots and lots and lots of rhinestones. So many rhinestones that it's amazing little children can walk in those dresses. 2. Children's beauty pageants are powered by Pixy Stix. Most of us probably don't remember that the flavored-sugar candy Pixy Stix still exists. But these beauty... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2014/01/toddlers-and-tiaras-5th-anniversary-5-things-we-have-unfortunately-learned.html

'Toddlers and Tiaras': Now with a chance for animal cruelty!

As if "Toddlers & Tiaras" weren't disturbing enough on its own, now they're bringing helpless pets into the mix. Yes, there's a pet pageant. Pets and little kids -- two groups forced into these strange traditions, mostly against their wills. The season premiere features three little girls and their three little (and not so little) pets: Rainbow Dash (named after a My Little Pony) with her dog, Titi, Gabby with her guinea pig, Puddinin, and Lily with her miniature horse, Blackjack. Both the children and the pets got captions when they "spoke."Note: This beauty pageant takes place in Indiana and features a miniature horse. It's a missed opportunity to feature Lil' Sebastian! (If you don't get the reference, please go watch "Parks and Recreation" now.)If you're not yet scared, here are 10 reasons why you should be:1. "I don't think I'll be going to hell because of pageants. I could see if I had her on... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/09/toddlers-and-tiaras-now-with-a-chance-for-animal-cruelty.html

'Toddlers & Tiaras': One Million Dollars Invested In Pageants

“Probably near a million dollars," Kelly admitted. "They have a tour bus, they have a race-car trailer, they have Carl the bodyguard. They have their 13,000 square-foot practice building with a stage.” A practice building larger than many people's houses, a tour bus and a body guard! These girls are five! She also took their victories very seriously. While both girls placed in the pageant, she still wasn't pleased. she told the judges that Giovanni should have won the face title, as she was the prettiest girl in the pageant -- Kelly said quite plainly that Gia was prettier than her sister Alycesaundra. She then told the judges she would have beaten them "to death" if her daughter hadn't been there. Classy. 'Toddlers & Tiaras' mom admits to living through her child

You can thank Lisa, one of the moms whose daughter is profiled on the Wednesday, Aug. 28 episode of "Toddlers & Tiaras," for voicing the following statement: "I think I'm living my dreams through my little girl." Just as we've always suspected! In Zap2it's exclusive sneak peek at the TLC show, 4-year-old Destiny does that thing where she tries to swivel her neck sassily like a grown-up but really just ends up looking like she's on an over-caffeinated sugar high as she tells her competition in a confessional, "I'm in town now -- you can't beat me, girls!"But as adorable as she is, it's a little sad as the "feisty little diva" (as her mom calls her) admits why she competes in pageants: "I like my pageants just because my mom says so."Check out the clip below. 'Toddlers & Tiaras' glitz dress breakdown: 'Age 4 and up is when you start to need more of the bling-bling'

The "glitz" dresses that contestants wear on TLC's "Toddlers & Tiaras" can cost as much as a wedding gown and range from $400 to $10,000 depending on age, according to Annette Hill, director of Universal Royalty, one of the beauty pageants featured on the show. But unlike a wedding dress, they are worn again and again."You want to wear your dress as much as you possibly can, especially because you outgrow it," Hill tells Zap2it. "Then you sell them in a pageant community type of place to sell dresses that are very admired and needed."RELATED: 'Toddlers & Tiaras': The best quotes everWhat makes glitz dresses so expensive are the custom design and all the tiny details intended to make them shine or glitter onstage."Glitz dresses are over the top with rhinestones and sequins and ruffles," Hill says.
