The story takes place in an unspecified future date, referred to as the 71st year of the True Era. 70% of all human beings have migrated from Earth to other planets of the Solar System and a Dyson sphere, constructed around the Sun. The world is divided between two superpowers called the Dorssia Military Pact Federation and the Atlantic Ring United States(ARUS), and a small neutral nation called JIOR that has prospered economically. In the same year, the Dyson sphere, built by JIOR, is invaded by Dorssian military forces. Haruto Tokishima, a student from Sakimori High School living on the sphere's "Module 77", discovers a mysterious and powerful mecha called Valvrave and uses it to defend the module from a Dorssian invasion that takes over the rest of JIOR. Once they learn that both Dorssia and the ARUS intend to claim the Valvrave for themselves, with no concern with their lives, the students of Sakimori High declare Module 77 an independent state and abandon JIOR territory. Soon after, several other Valvraves are found inside the school and some of them are claimed by other students who join Haruto's fight to protect it. Once Haruto is approached by L-elf Karlstein, a Dorssian spy who claims to have the intentions to one day stage a revolution in his own country, both join forces in an unlikely alliance to secure the sovereignty of their newfounded nation.

The students of Sakimori High enjoy their new-found independence while, unbeknownst to them, the power usage of Module 77 begins reaching critical levels. Meanwhile, with the ARUS and Dorssian forces at a standstill, the ARUS senate tries to decide how to deal with Module 77 while the Dorssian forces have a rally. Some time later, Module 77's power finally cuts and without power for the weather system, it resonates with the magnetic fields of other systems and subsequently causes snow to fall within the module. With Takumi Kibukawa, Sakimori's physics teacher trapped in the Valvrave holding bay, Raizo helps Yusuke locate the reset switch. Since Haruto starts feeling cold, he is helped into the school's mascot suit by his friends to warm up. Meanwhile, the cold weather causes some infighting amongst the girls and Takahi Ninomiya starts blaming Shoko for their predicament because of her proclamation of independence, although Saki tries to defend her. As things start to heat up, Haruto tries to quell the fighting, although Saki even bites Takahi, and ponders something vaguely familiar to when Haruto switches consciousness by biting someone. Soon enough, as Shoko even tries sing a Christmas Carol to lift everyone's spirits, the power is restored thanks to Yusuke, and Haruto is left embarrassed in the mascot suit. Afterwards, the students of Sakimori High, broadcast a video of the entire school singing and having fun to their families in the JIOR 01 sphere through the WIRED Network, which is also viewed by ARUS citizens as well as Dorssia. Afterwards, Haruto and Saki use the Valvrave to explore the depths of Module 77 in the hopes to learn more about it, and he thanks her for singing the lead in their video. As they descend, unbeknownst to them, they are led to a holding bay which had been previously discovered by L-elf on his exploration of Module 77. The bay is revealed to have more Valvrave mechs sporting different colors. Saki grows excited and tries to take a closer look, but Haruto holds her back, wanting to keep it a secret from everyone for fear that more people might become "monsters" like him. Saki agrees, and in exchange, she kisses a surprised Haruto.
