Dollhouse

One of my favourite recent sci-fi shows. Fabulous acting, great scripts, brilliant directing. My only complaint is that it finished after only two seasons and in such a final way! I still think fondly of all of the characters. The ending was beautifully thought out, but very tragic. I highly recommend this.

The initial scenes made me cringe a little and I thought that it didn't bode well for Scorpion. However, once the main storyline started, I was pleasantly surprised. It is obvious that all of the characters have a past and a story to tell. They are very different characters in certain aspects but all very likeable. The script was well written and full of suspense. There were a couple of points in the pilot that I was fully aware that the events were very far-fetched. But I was sufficiently engaged by the story and characters to enable me to suspend disbelief. I really enjoyed the whole episode and am keenly awaiting the development of the story!

I was really hoping for something good from this. I love the Batman story and it had potential. But a new show has to hold my attention for at least the pilot episode. I'm afraid I didn't make if past the first half. I know it will appeal to some, but there wasn't enough in it to give me the incentive to continue watching. There is better.

Black Box

I was unsure to start with if this was going to be to my liking. I have personal experience with what bipolar is and get annoyed when mental illness is portrayed as either the reason for someone being "special" or "brilliant" or when it is portrayed as making people victims. However, Catherine's illness (the main character) in Black Box is interwoven with an interesting storyline in its own right.

Her psychotic, manic, paranoid, depressive, hypersexual behaviour is all typical of bipolar. It may seem to some people that it is over played, but it is very accurately shown in my opinion. She is a brilliant neurologist not because she is mentally ill but despite her daily struggle with her illness. The emotional turmoil that her ongoing decisions bring to her are insightful and interesting to watch. I hope that this show is renewed and that we can see more of how her character and the people she interacts with on a daily basis.

Another Period

This has some talented actors, but what they're doing in this show I have no idea. It's not funny, the dialogue is tedious and it seems to rely on violent confrontation for it's gags. I won't be watching more. There was one part that was mildly amusing in the first episode. *SPOILER* Where the new maid, Celine, is introduced to the ladies of the house and she is promptly told her name is not suitable for a servant and they shall call her "Chair". The only reason I found this part even vaguely amusing is due to my grandmother being in service at the start of the 20th Century. Her name was Priscilla, it was deemed an unsuitable name for a servant, so she was henceforth called Mary by the family.

The Last Man On Earth

I think I like this. It's quirky and unexpected. I'm not sure why I don't feel I can give it more than three and a half stars though. Perhaps it's because the episodes are short, each one seems as if it's almost a vignette rather than a full episode. It's very amusing and I can relate to so many of the things that Phil does, although perhaps not the toilet pool. I think the thing that is preventing me from giving it a higher rating is that he is so grubby and dirty and it makes my skin itch watching him. Also, so what he doesn't have running water in his current home, MOVE to another part of town. But I'm being picky.

***SPOILER*** The show itself has a lot of potential, although I'm not sure how long they can keep it going as they've had to introduce two other characters and it's only episode three. So we'll have to see if they can stretch it out. Perhaps the writers have other surprises up their sleeves other than him having a selection of women to have sex with? I don't begrudge him it, he is the last man on Earth, but I'm not sure how many jokes can be made about it before it's no longer funny. I really want this show to work though. I'll stick with it for a little while anyway.

One of those TV sci-fi shows that were so bad and so low budget that they stick in your memory as an example of something that should never have been broadcast. I was only 11 years old, I've been scarred for life. Nothing else lives up to the horrific standards of this monstrosity. I shall now cry myself to sleep again imagining my mother's Venus fly-trap attaching itself to my eyeball and making me go blind.

The Affair

I found it very hard to get into and rather unlikeable. None of the characters elicited any sympathy from me whatsoever. I have a feeling this one is a love or hate. I will just say for everyone to give it a go and it might be up your alley.

Real Humans

Äkta Människor (Real Humans - English)
Set in an alternate reality where realistic androids known as hubots are in everyday use by many. They are used for as domestic helpers within families, as general workers in factories, for the mundane, but increasingly they are used as companions for everyone from the elderly to lonely men and women. Many welcome and embrace their use, others fear them taking over. The group "Äkta Människor" - "Real Humans" is a group formed to fight for the rights of natural humans - but how far will they go to achieve this aim?

How do the hubots feel? This is the question: do they feel? They are supposed to be incapable of hurting humans; is this really true? Who is the mysterious and talented Leo? Who is the beautiful hubot Anita? Why doesn't Lennart want to trade Odi in for an upgrade? Who are the roaming group of unowned hubots and are they capable of murder?

Very original, with a dystopian feel. Right from the beginning there is a credible tension between fear, humour, empathy and curiosity. Excellent performances, beautiful presentation and quality production.

Highly recommended!

Rush

Unfortunately, I couldn't make it through the whole of the pilot episode. Rush is an unlikeable character with no redeeming qualities. Not even the people he knows seem likeable. They all let him walk all over them. The idea is unoriginal and boring. Think House meets Ray Donovan but with no charisma or sex appeal. No thanks, it's been done a lot better previously. I'll pass.
