This family is like the old show 'Dallas' with Lucious as JR the guy you love to hate and then hate some more. The Lyon clan or rather the Lyon parents, Cookie and Lucious, give new meaning to the word dysfunction. It is feral the way that they bite each other and tear each other down. Empire has a great cast, who are all multitalented, especially musically. It manages to have ironic humor whilst being realistic and gritty. Great depiction of the lifestyle of a music mogul from the hood. If you like shows full of drama and great cliffhangers then this show is for you.
Incredibly relatable, funny and hip comedy that while it speaks to what many people don't know about black families that are in the upper middle and middle income brackets in the US, is just as in common with many households of different income levels, geographic locations and ethnical make-up and what a mixed ethnicity family would look like as well. Aside from the humor, it is a very candid look at America and modern society today. Dealing with issues from the Z generation to the 40 something and over. While it may appear at times to deal a harsh criticism on political standpoints, I find it delivers its message in a witty way and can be seen almost always from two viewpoints, which it does tastefully and with regard to both sides. It is a modern day family sitcom that has humor that anyone can understand young or old, religious or non-religious, as well as black, white, red or blue. The writing is subtle in its dealing with difficult issues about family life and does not appear to be forcing an agenda. It is lighthearted and really does improve the mood, as all good comedy shows should do. Timing and punchlines are delivered smoothly and effortlessly. Each character has been developed very well as the show has progressed, in so much so that each has an integral part in delivering the overall feeling one takes away from each episode for the most part. I guarantee you, you will smirk, giggle, laugh-out-loud , nod your head in agreement and be carried down the road to nostalgia of your own childhood and parenting memories, during each installment of this very engaging, feel-good sitcom. Don't believe me without watching for yourself!
Lovely, playful, funny, refreshing, hip yet quirky...the kid from Nickelodeon's 'Drake and Josh' grew up very attractive and John Stamos is still so damn hot and fun-loving, even as a grandad, you can't help but imagine yourself being with a guy like him. I like this show a lot. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy. The 80s background songs makes you nostalgic. A good comedic sitcom that just might be a hit with many kinds of audiences.
This show though!! So frustratingly twisted, diabolical and filthy. Yet so real a depiction of tortured human spirits, enslaved to their art, enraptured by pain, love, malice and envy. It is dark and shameful and you are entangled by the web it weaves. Just when you think it is being unravelled you realise you are caught even deeper in a web of betrayal, deceit, sadness, torture and disappointment. Yet it is so well acted! The main characters are so talented! The writing so exquisitely engaging and it pulls you in like a seductive lover. You love to hate it but must watch the next episode immediately. You are ravenous for it. Yet you cannot be satiated. I am sick to my stomach at the plotline, yet i watched all 8 episodes back-to-back. A must see for the strong spirited who appreciate realism. A must see for the lovers of ballet, fine art and all things beautiful and passion-filled. But not for the weak or the depressed or those who are too empathetic.
Great beginning!! Loved the walk-ons, hope they keep it connected that way. Let's Chicago Fire characters be in my life one day more in a week. It's a typical medical drama just like many from ER days. And then it's not. The characters are unique and have not started out in the way others did. More of a cross-section of the human experiences,languages,lifestyles.. and reflects real life as it is now. I am a doctor's kid, was reading medical books before I could read well. Know a lot about the reality of this lifestyle as my Dad studied while I was a toddler and my 'afterschool care' and playground was the Hospital he did his residency/eventual consultancy at and then his own office once he went solo. It feels totally realistic. The terminology used is accurate and the complications that can occur are spelled out clearly. I am all in!! Great job again Dick Wolf!!!
My high school crush....Rob Lowe..whose chiseled jawline I can never forget after selling many a meticulously drawn, accurate portrait of him to my high school classmates. He had my heart for real. However, his acting skills were never academy award winning material. Yet there is an element of surprise that is entertaining in this scenario. Who knew he could play the straight guy to the comic drollness of another puberty hero Fred Savage. This comedy is not the average comedy. It is dry and as many have said 'over the top' and surreal in many ways. It has a down-home feel to it reminiscent of many 80s and 90s family sitcoms. With a twist: a crazy premise. Family reunited with ever competitive, slightly immature, good natured but egocentric famous actor brother. A Law firm ties the characters together, with cinematic quality of a 'Cagney and Lacey' or 'Law and Order'. Yet while it seems terribly overly-dramatic and waning in hilarity, its obvious flaws are actually what makes it work as a likeable distraction from real world problems. Wouldn't give it a great rating, it may not last even two seasons, Yet, I'm entertained nevertheless and i have laughed out loud at the bravado of the writers to write such fluff yet somehow it works out. More honestly, anything to look into the depths of those true-blue eyes of Rob Lowe is worth it. Man has he aged well!
Love the theme music...not necessary to comment on but it adds to the good feeling when you watch this show. Now while this sitcom is not so maddeningly funny, it is in fact a well acted romantic comedy about a twenty-something single male living in L.A. He comes with a host of lunatics in his life, (don't we all), such as the femininesque often bitchy co-worker Ricky, whose sexual orientation cannot be defined. Then there is the diva-esque Ex-one night stand, whose character I cannot understand at all, who befriended his pathological, pathetic egocentric younger sister, who also is unnerving to me and hard to like. Then there is the decadent boss, who one can actually like surprisingly, though she is an eccentric, self-involved, pushy cougar. He also has on his side an immature fitness geek best friend, who is subtly oblivious most times. Now here is the catch that makes this show a bit different if not the same from past sitcoms like 'Friends' meets 'Big Bang theory' ; his love-interest also is a very central part of his life, likeable and mostly a good friend to him. I like that Kevin is cute and quirky and is not always a loser. What I don't like is why they continue to make him so spineless to that manipulative selfish sister and her equally egomaniacal, integrity lacking BigBFF who is kind of a hanger on that I don't believe needs to be central to the plot in any way. A good show to forget your stress and feel young and unperturbed by life's harsh lessons but I get unnerved at how much Kevin gets taken advantage of. Writers here's a tip from an avid sitcome watcher and comedianne: Kevin can still be funny with a SPINE. I recommend this as a perfect Saturday night alternative to getting wasted in another bar. Ladies you can also watch it with your special guy because he will dig all the details they put into making the male characters relatable to almost any man, geek, jock, best bud, wing man...etc...
