Punk’s not dead, says every new generation of punk bands—and they’re not wrong. The Canadian quartet PUP channels the spirit of the genre’s pioneers, mixing a snarl with a smirk on its excellent self-titled debut. The disc was released earlier this year, and it’s on the long list for the Polaris Music Prize, which is Canada’s way of recognizing the greatness of Canada. (It’s not wrong, either!) Here, PUP roughhouses its way through the Buzzcocks’ classic “Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve),” a stone classic from one of punk’s most fertile years, 1978.
