Absolutely Fabulous is a British sitcom written by and starring Jennifer Saunders, and co-starring Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha and June Whitfield. It was broadcast on the BBC from 1992 to 2005, and is popularly referred to as Ab Fab.
A show brilliant in its uncensored bad behavior and satirical humor. This is one of those rare TV comedies that can be watched over and over and never gets old. In the current climate of social restriction and political correctness, there is something very liberating about watching people do all the things society tells us are bad without one iota of regret. This is made even more powerful by making the characters a pair of middle-aged, upper-crust women who "should know better." Sharp in all departments, with a terrific cast, hilarious (and surprisingly true) writing, and a gorgeously gaudy wardrobe. Joyously self-absorbed chaos is still the name of the game, and nobody plays it better than Eddy and Patsy. These two are the funniest characters ever conceived in a long time. Filled with incredible character development, excellent scripts, and excellent acting, you won't find a comedy better than this. Absolutely Fabulous has a definite oddball sense of humor that can be really hilarious. "Absolutely Fabulous" is, without a doubt, one of the funniest shows to ever come across the pond from the U.K. This series appeals to old & young, male & female, gay & straight. It was the first of its kind and brilliant because of its witty and extremely satirical reflection on people and society.
Fact: French and Saunders are British comedy icons. [Note that Dawn French was in the show occassionally, but the blond is an actress (Lumley) and not one of the writer]
Ab Fab is (present tense) one of the funniest British comedies ever produced. Rather oddly, as the cast has aged, the characters they created don't seem dated at all, and with the somewhat recent new season and movie the show continues to be as funny as ever. Bubbles just slayed me in the movie. I only gave the series 4 stars as at times the comedy overly relies on the duo being drunk or high instead of writing something more cleverer.
** SPOILERS ** I still laugh at the thought of the 2012 Olympics scene in the recent "last" season when Patsy lights her cigarette from the torch. LMAO. The original series run is a must watch, my favorite is when Patsy sells Saffron into White Slavery in Morocco. Well of course she did.
A charming comedy that ventures into the more risque topics and comedy. It seems almost before its time. This show premiered in the early '90s, without knowing that you might not even notice. Does it get a bit repetitive after the first couple seasons? Sure, but it's always funny and smart. The episodes are only 30 minutes each and 6 episode seasons (not including specials), so it's a quick marathon.
Jennifer Saunders, the Queen of British Comedy (at least to me), plays Edina Monsoon, a rich fashionista who runs a modeling agency, fashion magazine or some such, I forget cause I'm usually too busy laughing. In between her time at work (with her outrageously dimwitted assistant, Bubbles) and her time at home (with her dotty but adorable mum and her rebellious by-way-of being a complete prude daughter), she rampages through London and much of the word abroad drinking and drugging with her best friend Patsy. Edina and Patsy are like "Sam and Frodo" if the latter's mission was to get as debaucherous as possible while still looking fabulous. Sweetie, this show is simply a must see for fans of British comedy darling. Do check it out won't you?
