Chaz Bono to guest star as himself on 'Degrassi: The Next Generation'

Canada's long-running teen drama "Degrassi: The Next Generation" has tackled plenty of serious subjects over the years, and fans in the U.S. have taken notice. Now Chaz Bono, one of Hollywood's most visible LGBT activists, has taken notice, and dropped by the show's Toronto set to film a cameo.Bono, who documented his sex change in the documentary "Becoming Chaz," will play himself in scenes with the show's transgender character, Adam Torres (Jordan Todosey). "I work with a transgender teen support group that is part of the organization Transforming Family," Bono tells People, "so when the opportunity to be part of a series that features a trans teen came up, I was thrilled."The episode will air in the fall, but came about after Bono met the "Degrassi" team at the Emmys in 2011. People has deets on the role, which will feature Bono as a celebrity judge at a Degrassi Battle of the Bands contest."Adam's storyline... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/06/chaz-bono-to-guest-star-as-himself-on-degrassi-the-next-generation.html

'Degrassi' spin-off 'Highland Gardens' casts Jewel Staite and Chelan Simmons-- but they don't want you to know that

"Degrassi" spin-off, "Highland Gardens," has started production in Toronto, Canada, but it appears the cast is being rather secretive about their involvement in the 6-episode series. As we reported a few weeks ago, Cassie Steele will be reprising her role as Manny Santos on the series centered around the titular Hollywood hotel where many Canadian actors live during pilot season. Well now it appears she has two new costars."Firefly's" Jewel Staite, who we recently shared would film a guest spot on "Supernatural," and "Kyle XY's" Chelan Simmons have joined the cast. However, the actresses seem to be trying to keep the details under wraps. Why? We have no idea. "Hey world: follow my new gorgeous and lovely co-stars on my new show I still can't tell you about: @ChelanLSimmons @cassandrasteele," Staite tells fans via twitter.Maybe she can't spill the details, but Vancouver-based talent agency, Principals Talent was more than ecstatic to share Simmons' casting news on... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/08/degrassi-spin-off-highland-gardens-casts-jewel-staite-and-chelan-simmons---but-they-dont-want-you-to.html

Cassie Steele to return as Manny Santos in Degrassi spin-off

Heads up Degrassi fans! The adventures of Manny Santos aren't quite over yet. Cassie Steele will be reprising her Degrassi role in the new series from Epitome Pictures, "Highland Gardens". The series will revolve around a group of Canadians looking to make it big in Los Angeles living together at the Highland Gardens Motel which was the subject of the 2004 documentary, Camp Hollywood. CTV picked up the show back in December, but at that point it was unclear whether or not it would be a spin off.  "It might or might not be a Degrassi spin-off" Producer, Stephen Stohn told The Star Scoop "we're still deciding." It looks like the decision has been made. Currently IMDB lists Steele as the only castmember and confirms she will be playing the ever sassy Manny Santos once again. No word on whether or not TeenNick has picked it up to air in the US, but with the recent cancelation of the Hollywood-centric... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/07/cassie-steele-to-return-as-manny-santos-in-degrassi-spin-off.html

'Degrassi' premiere: Keke Palmer on playing Keke Palmer

"Degrassi: The Next Generation" kicks off its eleventh - yes, eleventh - season on Monday night on TeenNick at 8 p.m. with a special one-hour episode... and Degrassi High will be visited by none other than fellow TeenNick star Keke Palmer.Palmer, who stars on "True Jackson, VP," plays herself in the episode, and she spoke with our friends at HollywoodLife.com about the "When Keke Met Sav" (Raymond Ablack) moments. Sav meets Palmer when she comes into town for a concert, and they hit it off right away. "He sees me for me," Palmer says. "He doesn't necessarily want to get to know me just because I'm a celebrity. He knows I'm famous, but that's not all I am to him."Though it's her first appearance on the show, it wasn't Palmer's first time on set. As a long time fan of the show, she's used her TeenNick cred to visit the set before. She says she's... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/07/degrassi-premiere-keke-palmer-on-playing-keke-palmer.html

'Degrassi' Breaks Down Walls -- Again -- With Transgendered Character

I remember when 'The Kids of Degrassi' first aired back in the early '80s -- I'm pretty sure I saw it in the classroom, the last refuge of an exhausted teacher in my downtown Toronto public school. I recognized the streets and even some of the kids, since my father lived in the area, and my mom was always sending me to artsy after-school programs. Even at that tender age, I recognized that 'Degrassi' was different from other television shows. Mostly I noticed that the kids weren't rich, good-looking or well-dressed. Hey, in television that's already pretty out there. But as we all know, 'Degrassi' has gone much further than simply showing us kids wearing K-Mart classics to a run-down school. They've shown us teens confronting sex, drugs, abortion, rape, sexual assault, cutting, abusive parents and homosexuality, and all without the after-school-special endings one usually expects from episodes dealing with these issues.
