Review of Empire

Wednesdays, 8:00 PM ET on FOX

60 minutes

Empire is described as a unique family drama set in the world of a hip-hop empire. It centers on Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard), a charismatic, savvy music superstar who is about to take his company, Empire Entertainment, public. Raised on the streets, he has never backed away from a fight and will resort to any measures, fair or foul, to defend his beloved Empire.

This series was recommended to me and I honestly didn't think I'd watch it past it's pilot as I'm not really into R&B/HipHop. But this show really surprised me! You'd obviously expect a show starring Terrence and Taraji to be good but I never expected it to have this quality to it.
The show has a sense of realness. I love that the characters have dimensions and layers. They're not all good/ bad. There is no villain or hero really. And the characters are strong and well established. I love Cookie! Who doesn't. But it's nice to see even good boy- soft spoken Jamal has his own dark side that comes out for a bit. There is drama/crime even murder. But it's not unreal (unlike a lotta series these days where the main characters - suburban stay at home moms for instance hire the mafia to kill a man just because they didn't like his speech or something)
Even relationships are realistic. They're flawed and twisted at times and quite unpredictable like Andre & Rhonda's marriage which don't really follow set rules of love as the other shows seem to these days.
Having Timbaland on-board obviously means good music and the songs go seamlessly with the plot and act as a refreshing break whenever the episode seems a bit too "soapy". I'm addicted to Jussie's voice.. especially to "Keep your money".
Other awesome moments would be: The guest stars are something to look forward to: Chris Rock (in a serious role! O_o) Timbaland and Pitbull to name a few. The dialogues.. Oh man! The burns and punchlines in some scenes are epic!
Love the actors. Love the characters. Love the music. Love the show.
Verdict: Addictive
