Rhoda Reviews & Ratings

30 minutes

Mary Richards' neurotic pal returns to Manhattan and her kvetchy family in this spin-off from `The Mary Tyler Moore Show.' The previously dateless Rhoda finally found love and wed (which proved to be a fatal mistake for the series), but Emmy-winner Valerie Harper's portrayal of her heartbreak when her marriage later shattered gave the show a touching emotional core, as did the wonderful Julie Kavner as Rhoda's insecure sister Brenda.

Rodha, set a record that still stands 40 years later for being the first and only television series ever to achieve a number one Nielsen rating for its premiere pilot episode, "Joe". 8 weeks in Joe and Rhoda got married. The 1 hour special broke and set tv records. There were wedding parties across the country. Monday Night Football host Howard Cosell joked on the air that he had not been invited to the wedding, and welcomed viewers back to the game.

The marriage failed and ratings started falling. The show never recovered after Joe and Rhoda got a divorce and Joe left the show. In the 5th season Rhoda was cancelled with four episodes remaining unaired, they were later aired in syndication.
