Jude Law gives one of his greatest performances as Pope Pius XIII, formerly Lenny Belardo, the first American pope. A chain-smoking, secretive, right-wing Machiavelli with a love of gold jewelry and big hats, Lenny knows what's up in the Vatican, so he eschews the counsel of the Secretary of State and brings in his surrogate mother, Sister Mary (Diane Keaton), to serve as his chief advisor. From the mind of Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino, this is a fun, stylish, interesting, wonderfully watchable series.

Wow! Jude Law rocks this roll. What a performance. This isn't a Pope you've ever seen before. Is he going to destroy the Catholic church? What is going to happen next? Can't wait to see where the writers take this character and us along with them.

You like plotting? WTF Moments? Characters between cruelty and holiness? Even so, this is NOT a traditional show or similar to anything you have seen before.
Beside the amazing Jude Law performance and the brilliant direction of Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino there's a lot to appreciate in this very aesthetic show: brilliant soundtrack, expensive setting and amazing photography (all the indoors are exact reproductions of the Vatican chambers, INCLUDING the Sistin Chapel), intriguing side-characters, revolutionary take on the Roman Church. A LOT of unexpected spirituality.
You will find yourself googling things about Vatican laws and rituals in no time. I know I did.
That said, Sorrentino it's probably not my thing (but hey I'm Italian and I even didn't like his Oscar winning movie) and I hate how he struggles to build up a reasonable plot while investing in the big moments and their visual effect. But that's my taste, so I would strongly suggest the show anyway!!
It's worth watching.

Not at all what I was expecting, but rather than be put off by that, the unexpected storyline was VERY compelling. However, I'm sure that, for some devout Roman Catholics at least, this show may have been interpreted as blasphemy, obscene, or insulting to the Church overall and / or to the Holy See, Himself (Pope Francis, the "real" one), since so many of Lenny's actions and outrageous statements fly in the face of how most Catholics perceive the Pope, His duties, His spirituality, and how He tends to these throughout His day-to-day papacy. Lenny exuded far too many foibles for most Catholics to relate to this character as the pope (which, I suspect, is the whole point of the series....). Lenny was both emotionally and spiritually immature. Emotionally, he had serious unresolved abandonment issues and many insecurities, and acted out on these with petulance, pomposity, and sometimes cruelty - like a 10-year-old boy. He became almost tyrant-like with his harsh edicts, his intolerance (he despised women and gay people and sought to expel every gay clergyman within the entire Church worldwide), his ultra-conservative agenda, and especially with his hugely unpopular "God does not love you because you do not love God enough" homilies. He was self-indulgent vs. selfless and self-disciplined (chain smoking, walking around the Swiss Guard married housing being a creepy Peeping Tom, etc.). To top it off, he did not even believe in God! Or at least he didn't seem to, as this is what I took away from a few of his "midnight rooftop talks" with Cardinal Gutierrez (who happened to be gay....). I could not imagine being a Catholic for long with such a bleak, harsh and intolerant papacy as Lenny's was portrayed. The last episode was very transformative, however, and somehow brought some much-needed HOPE and GRACE to Lenny's papacy (and hence, the series!). Jude Law was excellent in his role as Lenny Belardo-come-Pope Pius XIII, and Diane Keaton just NAILED IT in her portrayal of Sister Mary - a modern, yet traditional and obedient-to-the-Church nun. Since the show has long-since concluded, it is a GREAT "binge watcher!"

This is a really difficult series to get into. It's actually really painful to watch. I also can't help thinking that James Spader might have been a better choice as Pope (if he wasn't already in The Blacklist).

The role of PiusXIII seems to be custom tailored to Jude Law. He is playing his part fantastically. The show dares an interesting new scenery with a fresh story. Pius gives for an obscure character who leaves you in the dark more often than not. It is yet unclear how the story will evolve and what the interests of the different participants are. There are no clear good or bad sides, which I really like. All together the show starts really strong and I am looking forward to even more catching developments.

Well what can I say but perfect! I can imagine all this happening in the Vatican, it is a shady place!
Jude Law wears his hat well!
