The Tick

The tick - well-meaning, bullet-proof, strong gormless and clueless - is he a figment of the imagination of his (unwilling) sidekick, or is Something much more complicated going on?

The characters are over-the-top, clever, well-acted and (for a change, intentionally) funny. It's an entertaining corrective for all of the superhero movies which take their premise far too seriously.

The engaging cast has their work cut out for them making the premise work - that a group of genius-level troubleshooters contract their services to the US government and effortlessly solve situations that poor fools who only have a lifetime of experience can't.

There's also the problem that people with genius IQ's are presented as socially inept. I think they're getting confused with Autism (and "The Good Doctor" does that much better").

The first few series are fun, consisting of constant cliffhangers and some clever jokes but it beings to wear after a while. By series four, the whole thing starts to run out of steam.

Watch it for the character performances and the gags, suspend disbelief in the plot and have fun for as long as you can.

Combat Hospital

A kind of updated version of M*A*S*H, from Canada set in a an international hospital serving Afghanistan.
It has more realistic presentation of military discipline and medical practice and a lot fewer jokes - but worked really well..

Sadly it was cancelled after one series, mostly because the project could not pick up broadcast partners.

Worth a watch, if you accept that it's going to end on a cliffhanger and a lot of unresolved story lines.

Great fun with a brilliant ensemble cast.

Killjoys are principled bounty hunters who work in a well imagined solar system which possesses a number of habitable planets which are uled over by a commercial aristocracy.

This excellent premise wanders after a the first few seasons and I'm not sure that the 'star wars' result was because it was a development of the plot, or some executive thought there should be more conflict.

I think that, if they wanted a 'story arc', they should have stuck closer to the premise. However, I'm still watching and still having fun.

Stargate Universe

A tragically short-lived, edgier version of the Stargate franchise with a cast including some exceptional actors and a 'journey home' plot with the cast trapped aboard a starship the size of cities made by an ancient race and discovered by humans.

The central character is driven and unsympathetic, and there was conflict. This is probably why this series was not taken to the heart of the loyal audience of the previous incarnations, which is a shame, because it could have developed into something different and really good.

This series started just before the release of "Star Trek Discovery". It seems to me to be likely to appeal to all those Star Trek fans who want more of the same - who have got so deep into past series that they can't abide change.

Fact is, all of the plots so far would have worked perfectly well as an episode of almost any of the ST series. The comedy, which is supposed to be "The Orville's" distinctive characteristic, is actually almost in the background and rarely laugh-out-loud funny.

The problem is that is so much of a tribute to ST, it works much better as a new series than it does as a send-up.

As superhero series go, this one benefits from an engaging cast and the writers have used the 'multiple universes' premise very skilfully to ring the changes and stop it becoming repetitive. They have a also built up a complex mythology.

However, they are now reaching the limits of the premise. There are only so many things that a speedster can do, within the limitations of the format. That's a shame, because its so well and affectionately done.

I will go on watching to the end - it's that good - but a little innovation is now required.

Defying Gravity

A weird story, taking place during a manned 'grand tour' of the solar system which attempts to present that kind of exploration in a realistic (or at least feasible) way.

Unfortunately, this series was cancelled before the seeds of the more complex plot which had been sketched out could grow. We were left with a lot of puzzling hints which never played out and a story that was never completed.

Because of this, it's probably only for SF completists.

Think of a cross between "Indiana Jones" and "Warehouse 13" - an operative of mystical library acquires and secures dangerous mythical artefacts (like the 'Spear of Destiny" which the "Legends of Tomorrow" chased after a little later).
It only ran to three episodes which all used the same underlying plot, and some of the same props and effects.
Still, it's entertaining fluff. It just never quite came together or had any distinctive appeal.
The spin-off series ("The Librarians"- plural) is better, thanks to an ensemble cast providing greater possibilities for character development and funnier writing.

Marvel's Daredevil

No more feasible that any other 'superpower'... but if you get past the initial suspension of disbelief it's a great watch. More down to earth than other Marvel efforts, with complex and engaging characters and real moral ambiguity - Daredevil alternates between arguing the law in court (as a lawyer) and taking it into own hands (as a vigilante) - and struggles to resolve this contradiction.
