Rookie Blue

Rookie Blue is probably the only show I watch that nobody else watches. Literally, no one...Not only that, I haven’t even met a single person who has heard of it! BUT, that being said, it is also easily one of my favorite shows of all time. It's probably the only good show to come out of Canada, and is also the best ‘summer-show’ by a long shot.

I can admit that it’s not super original. I hate saying this about a show that I’m so fond of, but it’s really just your classic cop show – period. And yet, there’s just something about this show that had me hooked from the very first episode. I’m so incredibly invested in these characters – when things in their lives are at stake, I swear I feel the weight of those stakes in my own life. I root for relationships, cry at failures, and believe in the friendships of these cops and the development of those friendships.

Sentimentality aside, this is honestly just such a good show. And you won’t understand it till you give it a shot. So just watch it. My name’s not Nicole if this doesn’t instantaneously become your favorite summer show! Oh, and...Andy + Sam = everything that is right with this world. OKAY...now I'm done!!

Gilmore Girls

Ugh, is there anything better than a Gilmore Girls binge watching session? This show just doesn’t get old. I mean, best mother/daughter duo of all time: Lorelai + Rory; best couple of all time: Lorelai + Luke; and most perfect couple of all time: Rory + Jess. And then, of course, the most perfect couple that ever wasn’t…Jess + Me? Duh…

The writers nailed the fast-talking characters and pop-culture references to a ‘T,’ cementing Gilmore Girls in feel-good-series history. We laugh with our Gilmore girls, cry with them, and wish we were them, all nine season long…but we’re also slightly skeptical of their raging metabolisms (I wish!). Long story short, if you haven’t watched GG, start now. No questions. Just do it.

Masterchef Junior

I'm obsessed with this show. Already I happened to skew on the side of "Gordon Ramsay is my idol," so the idea of doing Masterchef with young contestants immediately struck me as a brilliant idea. I did see, however, why some worried about pairing a certain chef, known for yelling "f**k" and making home-cooks cry, with kids aged 8-13. But, I was optimistic. And I think now that the second season has come to a close, any of the initial nay-sayers have been convinced of the genius that is this show, as well!

It really is a superb show. The kids are incredible. They say things like "sriracha foam" (lol, wut?) that put my toast-making skills to shame. And they are incredibly supportive of one another, building each other up, and enjoying the healthy competition. We also get to see another side of the judges - Gordon doling out hugs like they're nothing but a thang, Joe picking up little kids left and right, and Graham giggling at all the crazy things 8-13 year olds are inevitably going to say on tv. Though lets face it, Graham was the nice one to start with…

Anyway, Masterchef Junior has totally hit the nail on the head, and I will certainly be following it for the seasons to come!

Finding Carter

Finding Carter started out strong...but kind of faltered as the season went on. I love the premise. It's extremely original, and has so much potential, but I found the execution to be on the poorer side.

The characters don't feel real. The way Carter speaks -- nobody speaks like that...it feels so forced and calculated. Her character in general -- the angsty, popular, teen has been done so many times, and her version of the character doesn't have any nuance to make it interesting.

I'm not going to throw in the towel quite yet. There are shows that have made it back from poor plot decisions and flat character-personalities buttttt...the writers and actors are really going to have to step things up a notch in order for Finding Carter to reach its full potential come season 2. Crossing my fingers, and hoping for the best!
