While Lorenzo begins to show the first symptoms of a serious illness that will kill him, his political enemies decide to attack him, questioning the solidity of the Medici Bank, which in fact is based on money stolen in the past from city finances. To cover up the loss and avoid the ruin, Lorenzo is in danger of coming into conflict with the city of Sarzana, from which his adviser Bernardi (of which a grim past will be discovered) comes from. Meanwhile, Tommaso Peruzzi, once an ardent supporter of Lorenzo, discovers the flaws of the Medici bank. Determined to cover up a scandal that could lead to the exile of the Medici, Bernardi tries to convince Lorenzo to eliminate Tommaso.
